Penalty Kicks Help Titans Pull Away From Spartans

Jessica Galason saved 10 shots while Kendra Jepson and Alek Kleis converted second-half penalty kicks as the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team defeated the University of Dubuque (Iowa), 3-0, on Saturday (Sept. 16) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Galason recorded her first goalkeeping shutout of the season by stopping two Spartan shots in the first half and eight in the second. Galason kept UW-Oshkosh (2-3-1) in the contest by counting eight of her saves before the Titans extended their lead to 2-0 during the 73rd minute of play.

UW-Oshkosh, which has won all four of its contests against the University of Dubuque (2-3-1), took a 1-0 lead on Mallory Knight's 18-yard kick just 6:15 into the match. Knight's first career goal followed a pass from Addie Schmitz.

Action remained calm until the University of Dubuque was called for a foul in the UW-Oshkosh penalty box area during the game's 73rd minute (72:28). Kleis then drilled the penalty kick into the net for her first score of the season and the Titans' second of the match. 

The University of Dubuque committed another foul in the UW-Oshkosh penalty box area during the contest's 84th minute (83:07). Jepson was called upon to attempt this kick and she converted it to give the Titans a 3-0 lead. The goal was Jepson's second of the year.

The Spartans lost the match despite posting advantages of 18-11 in shots, 10-5 in shots on goal and 6-2 in corner kicks.

Lauren Cangelosi, Alexa Martin and Lexus Rose all had four shots for the University of Dubuque while Tiffany Limmex had two. Cangelosi and Rose both had three of their shots on goal.

UW-Oshkosh's shot count included three from both Jepson and Knight and two from Taylor Arnold. Five Titans had one shot on goal each.

University of Dubuque goalkeeper Paige Dykstra had two saves – blocks on shots taken by UW-Oshkosh's Arnold in the 36th minute and Delaney Karl in the 55th.

Saturday's match was the third of the 2017 season for the University of Dubuque against a WIAC opponent. In addition to their loss to UW-Oshkosh, the Spartans also suffered a 4-0 setback to UW-La Crosse on Sept. 1 and played to a 1-1 tie with UW-Eau Claire on Sept. 10.

UW-Oshkosh travels to Fond du Lac on Monday (Sept. 18) for a game against Marian University.
