Titans' Season Ends In WIAC Championship Semifinal

First-half goals from three different players lifted UW-Whitewater to a 3-1 victory over UW-Oshkosh in a semifinal round contest of the WIAC Women's Soccer Championship held Thursday (Nov. 3) in Whitewater.

UW-Whitewater, which advanced to the tournament's championship match for the seventh straight year, took a quick 1-0 lead on Adria Schueler's goal during the fifth minute (4:38) of play. Schueler's first collegiate score followed a pass from Payton DeLuga.

The Warhawks (19-1) doubled their advantage when Brianna Reid scored her team-leading 12th goal of the season in the game's 12th minute (11:31). Reid became UW-Whitewater's all-time leading scorer by counting her 135th career point with the goal.

UW-Whitewater, which entered the match ranked sixth in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, increased its lead to 3-0 on Morgan Beaty's goal in the 36th minute (35:47). A pass from Emily Mouille created Beaty's second goal of the year.

UW-Oshkosh (10-9-1) cut its deficit to 3-1 on Robyn Elliott's sixth goal of the season and the 23rd of her career in the 57th minute (56:11). Elliott's 25-yard kick deflected off of UW-Whitewater goalkeeper Jennie Novak and sailed into the net.

The Titans, who played UW-Whitewater in the title match of the previous three WIAC Championships, had all three of their shots following Elliott's score saved by Novak.

UW-Oshkosh ended the contest with nine shots. Twin sisters Robyn and Rachel Elliott led the Titans with two shots apiece.

UW-Whitewater, which extended its winning streak to 18 consecutive matches, totaled 18 shots while posting a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Warhawks were paced by the four shots from both DeLuga and Reid.

Goalkeeper Madelyn Runyan saved five shots for UW-Oshkosh. The Titans also recorded a team save.

Novak stopped six shots, three in both periods, while protecting the UW-Whitewater goal.

With its win over UW-Oshkosh, UW-Whitewater advances to host UW-La Crosse (14-4) in the tournament's championship match on Saturday (Nov. 5). The winner of the WIAC Championship wil earn the league's automatic berth into the 64-team NCAA Division III Championship.

UW-La Crosse qualified for its match with UW-Whitewater by scoring a late goal in Thursday's other semifinal to defeat UW-Eau Claire (8-9-2), 1-0.

UW-Oshkosh's loss to UW-Whitewater marked the end of the Titans' eighth consecutive winning season.
