Titans Defeat Rams, Lose To Cobbers

Two-time All-American Mark Choinski pinned both of his opponents as UW-Oshkosh split a pair of matches at the University of Dubuque Duals held Saturday (Jan. 5) in Dubuque, Iowa.

Choinski remained undefeated in 15 contests (5 pins) this season by sticking Cornell College's (Iowa) Colin Honderd to the mat in 34 seconds and Concordia College's (Minn.) Travis Deegan to the surface in 4:21.

UW-Oshkosh (5-4) had five pins during its 36-12 victory over Cornell College (4-9) in the opener. In addition to Choinski's pin at 165 pounds, the Titans also received pins from AJ Schoenfuss at 125 pounds, Zach McDowell at 133, Zak Nelson at 141 and Ben Kitslaar at 197.

The Titans opened their match against the Rams with pins by Schoenfuss over Keegan Schultschik in 2:49, McDowell over Killian Perrigon in 1:22 and Nelson over Klayton Keller in 5:34 to take an 18-0 lead.

Cornell College followed with a pin of its own as Reilly Dolan glued the Titans' Shane Dziadosz to the mat in 2:59 at 149 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh then won three straight bouts to take a 30-6 lead. The string of victories included Choinski's pin, Corey Knudsen's 8-2 win over Casey Allen at 157 pounds and Bryce Herlache's 12-5 triumph over Nic Jarvis at 174 pounds.

Kitslaar later gave UW-Oshkosh a 36-9 lead with his pin of Kendale McCoy in 2:01.

Cornell College received its remaining victories from Bryce Oveson at 184 pounds and Chris Lyons at 285. Both wrestlers won one-point decisions as Oveson edged Patrick Reilly, 8-7, while Lyons nipped Jordan Lemcke, 2-1.

In UW-Oshkosh's nightcap, Concordia College (6-2) won the first five bouts before going on to post a 28-15 victory over the Titans.

UW-Oshkosh recorded all three of its wins in the final five bouts, including Choinski's pin of Travis Deegan in 4:21 at 165 pounds that sliced the Titans' deficit to 21-6.

The Titans owned the winner in the contest's final two bouts as Beau Yineman pinned Jacob Arends in 4:12 at 197 pounds while Lemcke defeated Noah Carter, 1-0, at 285.

Concordia College also won twice with a pin as Bret Wilson stuck Nelson to the mat in 1:35 at 141 pounds while Ty Johnson fastened Knudsen to the surface in 4:09 at 149.

Other winners for the Cobbers were Jake Nohre at 125 pounds, Benjamin Bogart at 133, Adam Jaeger at 157, Kaden Spindler at 174 and Nick Gravdahl at 184.

Nohre defeated Schoenfuss, 7-2, while Bogart ousted McDowell, 7-0, and Jaeger edged Dziadosz, 5-3. Spindler was an 8-4 winner over Herlache and Gravdahl a 12-4 victor over Reilly.

UW-Oshkosh visits two-time defending WIAC champion UW-La Crosse on Thursday (Jan. 10).
