Pioneers Defeat Titans With Victory In Final Bout

UW-Platteville tallied the decisive points on a pin during the 10th and final bout to defeat the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team, 27-21, on Thursday (Feb. 1) in Platteville.

The score was tied at 21 before the Pioneers' Lucius Rinehart closed the match with his pin of UW-Oshkosh's Ben Kitslaar in 4:52 during their 285-pound bout.

UW-Platteville (4-3, 3-2 WIAC) forced the winner-take-all bout as Grant Wedepohl earned three points for the Pioneers with his 5-0 victory over Juwon Anderson at 197 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh (4-10, 0-5 WIAC) fell behind 12-0 to UW-Platteville as Damien McCray and Anthony Senthavisouk were pinned in their contests at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. McCray had his match end with Beau Harrier in 4:30 and Senthavisouk with Scott Arneson in 4:56.

The Titans overcame their early double-digit deficit with a shower of victories, including Nate Arquinego's pin of Isaac Brosinski in 6:50 during their 165-pound bout. Arquinego's team-leading sixth pin of the season gave UW-Oshkosh an 18-12 lead. 

UW-Oshkosh began its run of victories with wins by Wesam Alabed at 141 pounds, Corey Knudsen at 149 and Mark Choinski at 157. Alabed defeated Luke Pradel, 17-6, while Knudsen ousted Blake Kittleson, 21-5. Choinski improved his season record to 12-0 with his 7-0 win over Isaac Roffers. 

Trailing 18-12, UW-Platteville got six points back when 174-pounder Jon Goetz pinned Zach Frassetto in 3:56.

The Titans then regained the lead at 21-18 on Colten Cashmore's 7-0 win over Kevin Gschwendtner at 184 pounds. Cashmore improved his season record to 21-3 with the victory.

UW-Oshkosh is off until it competes at the WIAC Championship on Feb. 9 in Whitewater.
