Choinski Captures First Place At MSOE Invitational

UW-Oshkosh's Mark Choinski went unbeaten in four contests to win the 157-pound title at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Wrestling Invitational held Saturday (Dec. 2) in Milwaukee.

Choinski, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler, won his weight class with a 6-1 victory over University of Chicago's (Ill.) Steve Bonsall in the title match. Choinski entered the tournament ranked second in the NCAA Division III by D3Wrestle.com, Bonsall sixth.

Choinski began his trek to the championship bout with a pin of Wheaton College's (Ill.) Jonavan Huggins in 2:53. He then posted wins of 4-1 over University of Chicago's Will Britain and 8-1 over Central College's (Iowa) Collin Groleau.

The Titans had two other place winners in Colten Cashmore and Anthony Senthavisouk.

Cashmore finished second in the 184-pound weight division with a 3-1 record. He posted wins of 9-3 over Hannibal-LaGrange University's (Mo.) Austin Hawes, 4-3 over Millikin University's (Ill.) Griffin Meeker and 4-3 over University of Chicago's Nick Ferraro before losing a 4-2 decision to UW-Platteville's Grant Wedepohl in the title contest.

Senthavisouk placed fifth in the 133-pound weight category with a 3-2 record. He won his fifth-place match with a 12-10 decision over Concordia University Wisconsin's Ramiro Vasquez. Senthavisouk opened with wins of 14-8 over Lakeland University's Jimmy Spencer and 11-2 over Hannibal-LaGrange University's Caleb McElfresh before losing on a pin to Central College's Cameron Timok in 4:43 and a decision of 18-5 to UW-Plastteville's Chase Katzenmeyer.

UW-Oshkosh also had Dellas Vandenberg post a 1-2 record at 141 pounds; Corey Knudsen a 2-2 record at 149 pounds; Oscar Ramos a 0-2 record at 165 pounds; Husam Alabed a 1-2 record (1 pin) at 174 pounds; John DePersia and Jordan Lemcke 0-2 records at 197 pounds; and Michael Dunlap a 0-2 record at 285 pounds.

Central College took first place in the 12-team meet with 131.5 points. Millikin University finished second with 123.5 points while UW-Platteville placed third with 120.5, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 98, University of Chicago fifth with 78.5, Wheaton College sixth with 62, UW-Oshkosh seventh with 47 and Concordia University Wisconsin eighth with 35.5. 

UW-Oshkosh was represented by seven other wrestlers on Saturday at UW-Parkside's Jim Koch Open in Kenosha.

The non-scoring event featured wrestlers from 17 collegiate programs, including NCAA Division I members Purdue University (Ind.), University of Northern Iowa and University of Wisconsin; NCAA Division II members Minnesota State University and UW-Parkside; and NCAA Division III members Luther College (Iowa), North Central College (Ill.), University of Chicago (Ill.) and UW-Oshkosh.

None of the UW-Oshkosh participants placed among the top six finishers in their weight class.

The Titans had Shane Dziadosz compile a 0-2 record at 149 pounds; Tony Kontney a 0-2 record at 165 pounds; Christian Quiles a 1-2 record (1 pin) at 165 pounds; Zach Frassetto a 1-1 record (1 pin) at 174 pounds; Braxton Potrykus a 0-2 record at 184 pounds; Juwon Anderson a 0-2 record at 184 pounds; and Tory Jandrin a 0-2 record at 285 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh is off until it competes at the Gator "Boots" Duals in Nashville, Tenn.
