Titans Dealt Three Losses At Border Brawl

Alan Dahlke and Jonathan Flores earned a pair of victories to highlight the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team's performance at the UW-Whitewater Border Brawl held Saturday (Jan. 24).

UW-Oshkosh (1-8) went winless in the event's dual match format, dropping decisions of 22-21 to UW-Eau Claire, 37-7 to 11th-ranked Cornell College (Iowa) and 51-3 to North Central College (Ill.).

Against UW-Eau Claire, UW-Oshkosh rallied from a 19-15 deficit with wins by Korey Kleinhans at 184 pounds and Dahlke at 197. Kleinhans defeated Matt Rieckhoff, 7-6, and Dahlke ousted Cecil Phialson, 4-0, to give the Titans a 21-19 advantage with one match remaining.

In the final bout, UW-Eau Claire's Justin Karkula won the 285-pound contest with a 7-3 victory over Matt Veneskey.

Other UW-Oshkosh winners against the Blugolds were Flores at 133 pounds, Joe Pelkey at 149 and Lance Arendt at 157. Flores and Pelkey won by a forfeit while Arendt defeated Robert Rocole, 6-4.

Against Cornell College, UW-Oshkosh built an early 7-6 lead before the Rams took the final seven contests.

Following the surrender of a forfeit at 125 pounds, the Titans jumped to their one-point advantage on Flores' 11-3 victory over Bryan Walsh at 133 pounds and Craig Mason's 3-2 overtime win over Jared Brathor at 141.

Cornell College took the lead for good on Trevor Engle's pin of Pelkey in 2:08 at 149 pounds.

It was all North Central College in the Titans' final match as the Cardinals jumped out to a 45-0 lead courtesy of four pins and two forfeits.

UW-Oshkosh's lone victory was Dahlke's 1-0 triumph over Filiberto Diaz-Duran at 197 pounds. The Cardinals answered the loss with Dylan Maher's match-ending pin of Veneskey in 1:55 at 285 pounds.

Other pins for North Central College belonged to Brandon Malone at 133 pounds, Layten Binion at 141, Blake Olson at 157 and Matt Marcotte at 174. Malone owned the quickest pin of the group with his time of 1:24 against Flores.

UW-Oshkosh competes at Wheaton College's (Ill.) Pete Willson Invitational next Friday (Jan. 30) and Saturday (Jan. 31).
