Titans Fall To Fifth-Ranked Eagles

Fifth-ranked UW-La Crosse recorded five wins by a fall and three by a technical fall en route to a 48-3 victory over the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team on Friday (Jan. 16) in Kolf Sports Center.

It was the Titans' second loss to a top-five NCAA Division III opponent in three days, with the other being a 41-3 setback to second-ranked UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Jan. 14) in Kolf Sports Center. The National Wrestling Coaches Association ranks the teams.

UW-La Crosse's Nelson Baker opened the meet with a pin of Rashaam Hill in 3:28 at 125 pounds.

The Eagles (13-3, 3-0 WIAC) increased their lead to 14-0 on wins by Dustin Weinmann at 133 pounds and Austin Schoen at 141. Weinmann defeated Jonathan Flores, 16-0, while Schoen edged Craig Mason, 7-4.

UW-Oshkosh (1-4, 1-3 WIAC) snapped UW-La Crosse's string of victories with Lance Arendt's 4-1 win over Chase Stiener at 149 pounds.

UW-La Crosse took the remaining six matches, with four coming by a fall.

Derek Weinmann pinned Hunter Mulock in 1:37 at 157 pounds to give the Eagles a 20-3 lead. Travis Hettinga followed with a 16-0 win over Parker Knuepper at 165 pounds to make the score, 25-3.

UW-La Crosse then extended its lead to 37-3 with consecutive pins by Jarrett Hoeppner at 174 pounds and Richard Carlson at 184. Hoeppner pinned Michael Berg in 4:54 while Carlson stuck Korey Kleinhans to the mat in 2:32.

The Eagles closed the match with wins by Eric Twohey at 197 pounds and Zach Tooley at 285. Twohey defeated Alan Dahlke, 16-1, while Tooley pinned Matt Veneskey in 5:53.

UW-Oshkosh wrestles at UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday (Jan. 20).
