Titans Hold On To Win WIAC Opener

Assisted by a pair of forfeits, UW-Oshkosh jumped out to an 18-point lead and held on for a 24-22 wrestling victory over UW-Eau Claire on Friday (Nov. 14) in Kolf Sports Center.

Following a double forfeit in the opening bout at 125 pounds, UW-Oshkosh's Jonathan Flores pinned Scott Worlund in 4:35 at 133 pounds. The Titans extended their lead to 18-0 with UW-Eau Claire forfeits at 141 and 149 pounds.

UW-Eau Claire (0-2, 0-1 WIAC) owned the winner in the next three matches to cut its deficit to 18-13.

Tyler Henke started the Blugolds' run of points with his 5-3 victory over Dylan Riley at 157 points. Ryan Behnke then pinned UW-Oshkosh's Parker Knueppel in 3:44 at 165 pounds before Matthew Laugen defeated the Titans' Michael Berg by an 8-0 score at 174.

UW-Oshkosh (1-0, 1-0 WIAC) stopped UW-Eau Claire's rally with Korey Kleinhans' pin of Alex Knutson in 1:51.

Trailing 24-13, UW-Eau Claire ended the match with victories by Josh Cormican at 197 pounds and Justin Karkula at 285. Cormican defeated Alan Dahlke, 5-4, while Karkula pinned Emilio Gutierrez in 1:09. The Blugolds needed pins in both contests to win the WIAC opener for both teams.

UW-Oshkosh will host the 12th Annual Dan Gable Open on Saturday (Nov. 15) in Kolf Sports Center.
