Kulchytskyy, Schiferl Compete At Midlands Championship

Nazar Kulchytskyy and Dan Schiferl each won a match at the prestigious Midlands Wrestling Championship on Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill.

Iowa won the team title with a record 187.5 points. Edinboro placed second with 102.5, while Michigan listed third at 84, Illinois fourth at 83 and Northern Iowa fifth with 70.5. UW-Oshkosh totaled 4.5 points from Kulchytskyy and Schiferl to take 37th.

In the 157-pound bracket, Kulchytskyy won his opening bout with a 10-6 decision over Colin Holler (SD State). Edinboro's John Greisheimer then defeated Kulchytskyy, 11-7. In his final match, Kulchytskyy had a medical forfeit to Maryland's Ben Dorsay.

Derek St. John (Iowa) captured the 157-pound championship.

Schiferl's first challenge came against Scott Liegel of Wisconsin. The close match went to Liegel by a 6-5 score. In the wrestleback, Schiferl pinned Wheaton's Matt McCrary in 4:52. Indiana's Nate Jackson then eliminated Schiferl with a 10-7 victory.

The 174-pound title went to Mike Evans of Iowa.

UW-Oshkosh returns to competition at Lakeland College on Saturday (Jan. 4).
