Titans Record Their Highest Season-Opening Score In Loss To Eagles

Competing for the first time in nearly a year due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, UW-Oshkosh opened its 2021 women's gymnastics season with a 188.150-185.600 loss to UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Feb. 27) in La Crosse.

UW-Oshkosh, which hadn't performed since winning the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title last March, established a school record by accumulating its highest season-opening score in the 48-year history of the program.

The Titans reached their overall score by counting 47.125 points on the vault, 46.725 on the uneven bars, 46.550 on the balance beam and 45.200 in the floor exercise.

UW-La Crosse, which led UW-Oshkosh following each of the four rotations, tallied 47.500 on the vault, 47.225 on the uneven bars, 46.850 on the balance beam and 46.475 in the floor exercise.

UW-Oshkosh captured two of the five individual titles as Kaira Hammond won the balance beam and Olivia Keller the floor exercise with scores of 9.625 and 9.55, respectively. Keller also finished fourth on the balance beam with a score of 9.50 while Hammond shared sixth place on the uneven bars with a result of 9.30.

Titan Haley Volstad placed in the top six in three events, including the vault where she finished third with a score of 9.50. Volstad also posted sixth-place scores of 9.30 on the uneven bars and 9.20 in the floor exercise.

UW-Oshkosh freshman Emily Buffington contributed a second-place score of 36.275 in the all-around competition and a sixth-place grade of 9.425 on the vault.

UW-Oshkosh's Rahdea Jarvis finished fourth in two categories after registering scores of 9.475 on the vault and 9.375 on the uneven bars.

The Titans also had Trinity Sawyer finish third on the uneven bars with a score of 9.45, freshman Leia Randall fifth with a figure of 9.40 on the balance beam and Emily Gilot sixth on the uneven bars with an amount of 9.30.

Winning individual titles for UW-La Crosse were Kerrie Legault on the uneven bars (9.65), Kacey Mortenson in the all-around competition (37.050) and Madi Vanderpool on the vault (9.65).

UW-Oshkosh resumes competition March 11 when it hosts UW-Eau Claire in Kolf Sports Center.
