Titans Finish Fourth At WIAC Championship

UW-Oshkosh finished fourth in the team standings after Sunday's (Oct. 6) final round of competition at the 2013 WIAC Women's Golf Championship. The 54-hole tournament was played over three days at Lake Arrowhead Golf Course in Nekoosa.

The Titans totaled 1,058 strokes to record their highest WIAC finish in six years. UW-Oshkosh, a three-time tournament champion, was a seventh-place finisher in both 2011 and 2012.

UW-Eau Claire captured its fourth WIAC title in five years and ninth overall with 999 strokes. The Blugolds earned the league's automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Division III Championship with the victory. The NCAA Division III Championship will be held May 13-16 at the El Campeon Golf Course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

Defending champion UW-Stout finished second in the seven-team tournament with 1,008 strokes. UW-Whitewater placed third with 1,043, UW-Stevens Point fifth with 1,086, UW-River Falls sixth with 1,088 and UW-Platteville seventh with 1,089.

Freshman McKenzie Paul led UW-Oshkosh with a fourth-place score of 244, 25 over par. She posted daily rounds of 77, 88 and 79 to share the fourth-place listing with UW-Stevens Point's McKenna Prestigiacomo. Paul's finish was the best by a Titan since Jennifer Young placed second in 2006.

UW-Oshkosh's remaining three scorers placed among the top-38 participants, as Theresa Henke finished 12th at 256, Sarah Sheldon 27th at 278 and Samantha Kuik 38th at 290.

The Titans also had Taylor Wenzel finish 43rd with 295 strokes and Emily Mallek 45th with 299. The event featured 51 golfers.

UW-Eau Claire's Kate Engler secured medalist honors with her 231 (+12). Defending champion Brittany McNett-Emmerich of UW-Stout finished second with 240 and Emily Stone of UW-Eau Claire third with 242.

UW-Stout's Howie Samb was selected Coach of the Year, while the Blue Devils' Alex Westman received the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.

UW-Oshkosh resumes its 2013-14 season in April.
