Titans Double-Up Red Hawks

Isabella Samuels had a team-leading 15 points and five rebounds as the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team defeated Ripon College, 64-32, on Saturday (Nov. 17) in Eau Claire.

UW-Oshkosh (3-0) never trailed against Ripon College (0-3) and maintained a double-digit lead for all but the first nine minutes of the game. The Titans are now 3-0 for the ninth consecutive season.

UW-Oshkosh scored the first 10 points of the contest and established their largest lead of 32 points with 11 seconds to play.

UW-Oshkosh's Melanie Schneider and Katie Ludwig had eight points apiece while Brooklyn Bull scored seven points off the bench. Ludwig also had three rebounds and one steal.

UW-Oshkosh had 13 players score, including Brooke Freitag and Nikki Arneson with five points each. Arneson also contributed three rebounds and two steals while Freitag owned two rebounds and one steal.

Olivia Campbell led the Titans with four steals, two blocks and two assists while Erin Vande Zande recorded four points and Kendal Schramek three.

UW-Oshkosh owned advantages over Ripon College in rebounds (33-32), assists (9-6), turnovers (13-30) and steals (13-5). The Titan bench accounted for 29 points compared to the 13 by Red Hawks reserves.

The Titans shot 42.6 percent (23-54) from the field, including 25 percent (4-16) from beyond the 3-point arc, and 63.6 percent (14-22) at the free throw line.

The Red Hawks shot 25 percent (10-40) from the floor while shooting 25 percent (3-12) from 3-point range and 75 percent (9-12) at the foul line.

UW-Oshkosh held Ripon College to just one double-digit scorer, Maggie Oimoen who counted 10 points.

Ripon College's Megan Dille had a team-leading five rebounds while Natalie Geiger led the Red Hawks with three assists and two steals.

After UW-Oshkosh jumped to a 10-0 lead, Ripon College answered with seven straight points to cut their deficit to three with 5:20 left in the first quarter. The Titans then closed the opening quarter with seven consecutive points to take a 17-7 lead.

The Titans extended their scoring run to 23 unanswered points by opening the the second period with a 16-0 streak to build a 33-7 advantage. The 23-point surge that spanned nearly 15 minutes was highlighted by scoring contributions from seven different players, including six by Samuels and five by Ludwig. 

Ripon College went 0-for-14 from the field and committed 13 turnovers from the 5:20 mark of the first period until there were 61 seconds left in the second quarter. Kassidy Walters snapped Ripon College's dry spell with a 3-pointer with 1:01 to play in the first half as the Red Hawks went to intermission trailing, 35-11. UW-Oshkosh's second-quarter performance included 9 of 14 shooting (64.3 percent) from the field. The Red Hawks' 11 first-half points matched the fewest allowed by the Titans in the past 57 games.

Ripon's Oimoen opened the third quarter with a basket 3:20 into the period, but the Titans' Bull quickly answered with a 3-pointer to increase UW-Oshkosh's advantage to 25 points at 38-13. UW-Oshkosh and Ripon College traded baskets the rest of the third period as the Titans took a 47-19 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Titans outscored the Red Hawks, 17-13, in the fourth quarter as 13 of UW-Oshkosh's points were scored by its reserves.

UW-Oshkosh, which won its eighth straight meeting with the Red Hawks, held Ripon College scoreless for the first 3:35 of the opening quarter, 8:59 of the second period and 3:20 of the third.

The Titans are off until hosting St. Norbert College on Nov. 26 in Kolf Sports Center.
