Titans Dealt Loss By Pointers

UW-Stevens Point collected 20 offensive rebounds and converted 20 free throws en route to a 60-52 win over the nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team on Wednesday (Feb. 14) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Stevens Point (13-11, 7-6 WIAC) reclaimed the lead for good at 25-22 with 2:26 left in the second quarter. The Pointers built three 10-point advantages during the second half, including a 45-35 lead at the 8:22 mark of the fourth quarter.

UW-Oshkosh (18-5, 8-5 WIAC) cut its deficit to 49-47 with 2:43 remaining, but the Pointers shot 8-for-10 at the free throw line while the Titans went 1-for-6 from the field the rest of the way.

UW-Stevens Point, which snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Titans, is alone in fifth place in the WIAC standings with one contest remaining. UW-Oshkosh, ranked 14th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, falls to fourth in the league.

Fourteenth-ranked UW-Whitewater (20-3, 10-2 WIAC) clinched the outright conference title on Wednesday while UW-Eau Claire (17-7, 9-4) and UW-La Crosse (16-8, 9-4) are tied for second.

Carly Cerrato led UW-Stevens Point with 14 points and two steals against the Titans.

Lexi Roland and Brooke Geier added 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Pointers while Mickey Roland had eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Taylor Barrett contributed seven points, nine rebounds, four blocks, three assists and two steals.

UW-Stevens Point, which limited the Titans to a season-low .317 field goal percentage, received just six points and three rebounds from its reserves.

The Pointers held advantages in field goal (.333 to .317) and free throw (.741 to .526) percentages, rebounds (47-38) and assists (8-4) while UW-Oshkosh owned edges in 3-point percentage (.286 to .154), turnovers (14-12), blocks (9-7) and steals (10-7). Both UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stevens Point established season highs in blocks.

The Titans shot 19-for-60 from the floor and 10-for-19 at the free throw line. The Pointers connected on 19 of 57 field goal attempts and 20 of 27 foul shots.

UW-Oshkosh entered the contest leading the country with 10.6 turnovers per game and ranked third nationally with a 1.38 assist-to-turnover ratio. The Titans also led the WIAC in scoring (72.5), scoring defense (49.6), field goal percentage (.448), average rebounding margin (+9.3) and 3-point percentage (.350).

UW-Stevens Point, the fifth team to reach 60 points against UW-Oshkosh this season, went into the game pacing the league in free throw attempts (507) and made free throws (367).

Jaimee Pitt and Melanie Schneider led the Titans with 10 points apiece off the bench as UW-Oshkosh's reserves accounted for 27 points and 14 rebounds. Titan reserve Madeline Staples had seven points and eight rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh starter Eliza Campbell chipped in eight points, a career-high-tying 11 rebounds and three blocks. Olivia Campbell contributed a career-best seven steals and three blocks for the Titans.

The Pointers had a 14-11 lead after one quarter, but UW-Oshkosh reclaimed a 21-20 advantage on a jumper from Schneider with 4:13 left in the second period.

UW-Stevens Point then took its final lead of the game at 25-22 on a 3-pointer by Cerrato with 2:26 to go in the second quarter before UW-Oshkosh's Chloe Pustina drilled a 30-foot 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to pull the Titans within 30-28.

The Pointers built leads of 40-30 and 42-32 late in the third quarter and 45-35 with 8:22 left in the final period.

Schneider drove for a layup to cut the Titans' deficit to 49-47 with 2:43 to play, but Geier and Lexi Roland both hit a pair of free throws to increase the Pointers' advantage to 53-47 with less than two minutes left.

Pitt completed a three-point play to make the score 53-50 with 92 seconds remaining. The Pointers snared three straight offensive rebounds on their ensuing possession before Mickey Roland made one of two free throws for a 54-50 UW-Stevens Point lead.

UW-Stevens Point was clinging to a 55-52 lead when Geier snatched an offensive rebound off of a missed 3-pointer and converted a three-point play for a 58-52 advantage with 16 seconds remaining.

The Pointers' victory was their first against UW-Oshkosh since a 54-47 decision on Jan. 10, 2015, in Stevens Point.

UW-Oshkosh hosts UW-Stout on Saturday (Feb. 17) in the regular-season finale.
