Titans Denied Piece Of WIAC Title

Courtney Lewis had 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead UW-Eau Claire to a 64-61 win over the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team in the regular-season finale on Saturday (Feb. 21) in Eau Claire.

UW-Eau Claire (16-9, 11-5 WIAC) earned the second seed and a first-round bye for next week's WIAC Tournament with the win. UW-Oshkosh (19-6, 11-5 WIAC) will be the third seed and host sixth-seed UW-Whitewater at 7 p.m. on Wednesday (Feb. 25) in Kolf Sports Center. The Blugolds won the tiebreaker for the second seed by sweeping the season series over the Titans. UW-Eau Claire defeated UW-Oshkosh, 63-57, in overtime on Jan. 17 in Oshkosh.

Trailing 56-46 with 2:25 remaining, UW-Oshkosh cut its deficit to 60-58 on a 3-pointer by Emma Melotik with 12 second left. Melotik scored the last eight points in a span of 17 seconds during the 12-4 run, but Lewis converted two free throws for a 62-58 lead with eight seconds to go.

UW-Oshkosh's Taylor Schmidt drained a 3-pointer to pull the Titans to within 62-61 with three seconds remaining. However, Lewis provided the final scoring with two free throws, and UW-Oshkosh did not have time to attempt a final shot.

UW-Eau Claire scored its last 10 points at the free throw line and made 20 of 25 (80 percent) from the charity stripe, including 17 of 21 (81 percent) in the second half.

Lewis ended the game shooting 5 of 12 from the field, including 3 of 3 from behind the 3-point arc, and 12 of 14 from the foul line. It was her third double-double of the season. Kristin Sahr added 13 points and Teenie Lichtfuss six points and a career-high 10 assists for the Blugolds.

The Blugolds shot 44.2 percent (19-43) from the field and 50 percent (6-12) from behind the 3-point line, including 75 percent (6-8) in the first half. UW-Eau Claire owned a 33-24 rebounding advantage.

UW-Oshkosh went on a seven-point run and opened the contest with a 13-7 lead after the second of two consecutive layups by Alex Richard with 13:34 to go in the first period. Richard's basket capped a string of four straight baskets by the Titans, but UW-Oshkosh was held scoreless for the next seven minutes.

UW-Eau Claire responded with 16 unanswered points to take a 23-13 lead with 6:52 left in the first half. Lewis contributed eight of the first 10 points of the run, which featured three 3-pointers.

The Titans responded with a six-point run to close within 23-19 on a three-point play by Katelyn Kuehl at the 5:03 mark, but the Blugolds' Abby Midtlien and and Sahr hit back-to-back 3-pointers to extend their lead back to 29-19 with 3:46 remaining in the period. Richard tallied the last four points of the half to cut UW-Eau Claire's lead to 31-25 at intermission.

UW-Oshkosh upped its run to seven points by scoring the first three points of the second half to get within 31-28, but six straight points by UW-Eau Claire gave the Blugolds a 37-28 lead with 14:53 remaining, and a free throw by Sahr gave UW-Eau Claire its largest lead of 14 points at 44-30 with 11 minutes left.

The Titans pulled within 54-46 on a 3-pointer by Maggie Novak, but two free throws by Lichtfuss extended UW-Eau Claire's lead back to double-digits at 56-46 with 2:25 left.

Richard led UW-Oshkosh with 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Eliza Campbell and Melotik had eight points apiece and Schmidt added seven for the Titans. Schmidt and Morgan Kokta both had a team-high four assists.

UW-Oshkosh ended the game shooting 42 percent (21-50) from the floor, 28.6 percent (6-21) from beind the 3-point line and 81.3 percent (13-16) from the free throw line. The Titans had 11 turnovers and the Blugolds 16.
