Titans Stung By Yellowjackets

Sally Linzmeier's triple-double led UW-Superior to a 58-46 victory over the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team on Saturday (Feb. 14) in Superior.

UW-Superior (17-6, 11-3 WIAC) and UW-Oshkosh (19-4, 11-3) are now tied atop the conference standings with two games remaining.

Linzmeier had 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to lift the Yellowjackets into a first-place tie with the Titans atop the conference standings with two games remaining. Linzmeier, the reigning WIAC Player of the Year, went 6-for-17 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the free throw line.

Yellowjacket Allyssa Lindberg added a career-high 18 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the floor, including 4 of 5 from beyond the 3-point arc. Carmen Watson contributed eight points, four rebounds and two steals off the UW-Superior bench. Grace Kennedy chipped in with six points and a team-high three steals.

UW-Superior, which defeated UW-Oshkosh for just the sixth time in 62 meetings, improved to 9-0 at home by holding the Titans to their lowest point total of the season. UW-Oshkosh had its six-game winning streak snapped.

The Yellowjackets shot 40.7 percent (22-54) from the field, 50 percent (5-10) on 3-point attempts and 81.8 percent (9-11) from the foul line. UW-Superior outrebounded UW-Oshkosh, 44-30.

UW-Superior reclaimed a 6-5 lead on a layup by Watson with 14:26 left in the first period and held an advantage for the next 12 minutes. The Yellowjackets' increased their lead to 17-9 on the second of two Linzmeier free throws at the 7:49 mark, but UW-Oshkosh responded with nine unanswered points to take an 18-17 advantage on a jumper by Eliza Campbell with 2:32 to go. UW-Superior missed five shots from the field and committed five turnovers during the more than five-minute stretch while the Titans connected on 4 of 7 from the floor.

The Yellowjackets took the lead for good at 19-18 lead on a basket by Watson with 2:09 to go in the opening period. UW-Superior scored eight of the last 12 points of the half to take a 25-22 lead at the intermission.

The teams combined to make 1 of 12 field goals to begin the second half, and a layup by Lindberg provided UW-Superior a 29-22 lead with 15:32 to play. UW-Oshkosh cut its deficit to 34-31 after two free throws by Campbell with 12:31 remaining, but Lindberg's third 3-pointer pushed the Yellowjacket lead back 38-31 and Linzmeier hit her only 3-point attempt to put UW-Superior up, 41-32, at the 9:42 mark.

A 6-0 run by UW-Oshkosh made the score 41-38 with eight minutes left, but UW-Superior rattled off nine consecutive points for a 50-38 lead with 4:54 to go.

Katelyn Kuehl broke the Titans' string of six straight misses from the field with a three-point play off an assist by Morgan Kokta that cut the UW-Oshkosh deficit to 50-41 with 4:40 remaining. Kokta's 3-pointer capped a seven-point run that brought the Titans to within 50-45 at the 2:30 mark, but the Yellowjackets scored on their next four possessions, two of which were extended by offensive rebounds, and tallied eight of the last nine points of the game.

Linzmeier achieved her triple-double with an assist on a Kennedy layup that put UW-Superior ahead, 56-45, with 97 seconds remaining.

UW-Superior, which avenged an 86-52 loss to the Titans on Jan. 3 in Oshkosh, tied its largest lead of 12 points on the last points of the game – two free throws by Brynn Liljander with 55 seconds left.

Linzmeier became the second WIAC player to record a triple-double this season. UW-Eau Claire's Courtney Lewis had 17 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in a 101-89 loss at North Central College (Ill.) on Nov. 29.

Taylor Schmidt led UW-Oshkosh with 15 points, two assists and three steals. Schmidt made 4 of 11 shots from the floor and 7 of 9 from the free throw line.

Kokta added eight points for the Titans while Campbell contributed six points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Titans, ranked 20th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, ended the game shooting 29.2 percent (14-48) from the field, a season-low 13.3 percent (2-15) from behind the 3-point arc and 61.5 percent (16-26) from the free throw line. UW-Oshkosh, which entered the game leading the WIAC with a .433 field goal percentage, held advantages in turnovers (16-22), blocks (4-1) and steals (11-9).

UW-Oshkosh plays host to UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Feb. 18). The Titans defeated the Warhawks, 72-58, on Dec. 3 in Whitewater.
