Titans Reclaim Sole Possession Of WIAC Lead

Alex Richard had a game-high 16 points and the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team never trailed en route to a 60-47 win at UW-Platteville on Wednesday (Feb. 4).

The Titans went into the contest with the best scoring defense in the league, allowing 53.2 points per game. The Pioneers were averaging a WIAC-leading 70.2 points, but UW-Oshkosh held UW-Platteville to 29.3 percent (17-58) shooting from the floor and limited its eighth opponent of the season to less than 50 points.

UW-Oshkosh (17-3, 9-2 WIAC) moved back into sole possession of first place in the WIAC standings after UW-Superior (15-6, 9-3 WIAC) lost a 64-59 decision Wednesday at UW-Eau Claire (12-8, 7-4 WIAC). UW-Platteville (13-8, 6-6 WIAC) fell into a tie for fourth in the league rankings.

Richard made 8 of 12 shots from the floor and added eight rebounds and two blocks. Marissa Selner had 12 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Ashley Neustifter and Taylor Schmidt chipped in with 10 and eight points, respectively, to help the Titans post their sixth straight win over UW-Platteville.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked 21st in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, shot 43.1 percent (22-51) from the field, 20 percent (3-15) behind the 3-point arc and 59.1 percent (13-22) from the free throw line. The Titans had advantages in turnovers (9-16), blocks (5-2) and steals (8-5).

The Titans raced out to a 7-0 lead behind six points from Richard. The Pioneers responded with six unanswered points and trailed, 11-10, midway through the first half. UW-Oshkosh tallied nine of the next 11 points for a 20-12 advantage at the 5:40 mark and increased its lead to 27-18 at halftime on a jumper by Neustifter. UW-Platteville opened its lowest scoring first half of the season shooting 1 of 8 from the field and closed the period 1 of 9.

UW-Oshkosh scored the first six points of the second half and held its largest lead of 16 points at 36-20 after a Selner free throw with 15:29 remaining. UW-Platteville went on an 11-4 run to cut its deficit to 40-31 at the 11:22 mark, but the Titans upped their lead to 43-31 on Alicia Tollefson's 3-pointer on the next possession, and UW-Oshkosh maintained a double-digit advantage for the last 11:07. The Titans shot 50 percent (12-24) from the field in the second period while the Pioneers shot just 30 percent (9-30).

UW-Platteville's Alyssa Krajco, who entered averaging a WIAC-best 18.2 points and 8.7 rebounds, was held to 13 points and six rebounds. Morgan Hartman added eight points for the Pioneers while Keeley Schultz chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds.

The Pioneers connected on 4 of 18 (22.2 percent) 3-point attempts and 9 of 11 (81.8 percent) throws from the foul line. UW-Platteville outrebounded UW-Oshkosh, 41-34, including 14-7 on the offensive end.

UW-Oshkosh puts its four-game winning streak on the line when it returns home to face UW-River Falls on Saturday (Feb. 7) in Kolf Sports Center.
