Titans Drift Away From Blue Devils In Second Half

The UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team had four double-digit scorers and pulled away in the second half for a 65-53 victory over UW-Stout on Saturday (Jan. 31) in Menomonie.

Ashley Neustifter paced UW-Oshkosh with 13 points and three assists while Alicia Tollefson added 12 points off the bench on 4 of 5 shooting behind the 3-point arc. Alex Richard recorded 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Eliza Campbell chipped in another 10 points from the bench on 5 of 7 shooting from the field while totaling six rebounds and three assists. The quartet combined to make 20 of 32 shots (62.5 percent) from the floor.

The Titans, ranked 23rd in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, won their sixth straight game over the Blue Devils, including a 94-71 decision on Jan. 14 in Oshkosh.

UW-Oshkosh (16-3, 8-2 WIAC) remained in second place in the league standings, one-half game behind UW-Superior (15-5, 9-2 WIAC). UW-Stout (6-14, 4-7 WIAC) fell into a tie for sixth place.

The Titans made six of their first nine field goal attempts as they built a 15-8 lead with 12:30 to go in the first half, but UW-Stout responded with eight unanswered points to reclaim a 16-15 advantage three minutes later. There would be four ties and six more lead changes before the end of the first half.

Neither team led by more than four points for the last 11:36 of the opening period. Two free throws by UW-Stout's Jenna Goldsmith gave her team the lead for the last time at 31-30 with 1:18 remaining before halftime. A layup by Campbell on the next possession provided the Titans a 32-31 edge at the break.

UW-Oshkosh held the Blue Devils scoreless for the first three and a half minutes of the second half and opened the period with an 18-6 run for a 50-37 advantage with 12:25 left. The Titans scored the first four points of the half and connected on 6 of 8 field goal attempts to end the game-changing run that began with two free throws by Marissa Selner and capped by Madeline Staples's three-point play. UW-Stout missed 6 of 8 shots from the field and committed seven turnovers during the first 9:55 of the second half.

UW-Oshkosh gained a 47-37 advantage on Tollefson's fourth 3-pointer of the game with 12:54 to play, and the Titans led by at least 10 points for the remainder of the contest. UW-Oshkosh's lead reached a game-high 18 points at 61-43 on a layup by Neustifter at the 5:39 mark. After attempting 30 field goals in the first half, UW-Stout had just 17 in the second.

The Titans connected on 48.1 percent (25-52) of their shots from the field, 50 percent (5-10) on 3-pointers and 40 percent (10-25) from the free throw line. UW-Oshkosh held advantages in rebounds (38-29) and turnovers (17-20).

Goldsmith led UW-Stout with a career-best 21 points, including 9 of 9 shooting from the free throw line, and 10 rebounds. The double-double was her third of the season. Kyleigh Herbert contributed 10 points for the Blue Devils.

UW-Stout shot 40.4 percent (19-47) from the floor, 9.1 percent (1-11) from beyond the 3-point arc and 66.7 percent (14-21) from the foul line.

UW-Oshkosh visits UW-Platteville on Wednesday (Feb. 4).
