Titans Tied For First Place At Midpoint Of WIAC Schedule

The UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team found its shooting touch in the second half and pulled away for a 57-48 victory at UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Jan. 21).

The Titans, who entered the game with a WIAC-leading .436 field goal percentage, shot 50 percent (10-20) from the floor in the second half after connecting on a season-low 22.2 percent (6-27) in the opening period against one of the conference's stingiest defenses. UW-La Crosse went into the game leading the WIAC by limiting opponents to 34.3 percent shooting from the floor.

Morgan Kokta led a balanced UW-Oshkosh offense with 11 points and three assists off the bench. Taylor Schmidt and Ashley Neustifter added nine points apiece while Katelyn Kuehl and Marissa Selner both had eight. Eliza Campbell chipped in with seven points and a career-high eight rebounds.

The Titans, ranked 24th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, ended the game shooting 34 percent (16-47) from the field, 22.2 percent (2-9) on 3-pointers and 67.6 percent (23-34) at the free throw line. UW-Oshkosh held advantages in rebounds (37-32), turnovers (23-27) and steals (12-7).

The Titans' fourth win in the last five meetings with the Eagles vaulted UW-Oshkosh (14-3, 6-2 WIAC) into a first-place tie atop the league standings with UW-Superior and UW-Eau Claire. UW-La Crosse (7-10, 2-6 WIAC) fell one spot to seventh. The Titans have won 32 of their last 41 WIAC contests.

UW-La Crosse scored 10 seconds into the game and never trailed in the first half. The Eagles led by as many seven points in the opening period, including 19-12 at the 6:21 mark. After the teams traded five consecutive turnovers, UW-Oshkosh scored five straight points, including four by Kokta, to pull within 19-17 with 2:47 remaining before halftime. However, the Eagles registered four of the last six points of the period and took a 23-19 lead into the break.

The Eagles began the second half with four turnovers in five possessions, and the Titans capitalized with eight unanswered points to take a 27-23 lead. UW-Oshkosh took its first lead of the game at 24-23 on a free throw by Kuehl at the 18:08 mark, but UW-La Crosse rallied to tie the score at 27. A layup by Alex Richard put the Titans ahead for good at 29-27 with 15:58 remaining.

UW-Oshkosh's sixth basket in seven attempts to start the second half came on a jumper by Campbell that provided the Titans with a 35-30 lead at the 13:49 mark. UW-La Crosse responded with the next four points to pull within 35-34, but the Titans put the game away with a 12-2 run for their largest lead of 11 points (47-36) with 6:17 to go.

During UW-Oshkosh's game-changing run of more than six minutes, the Eagles went 1-for-7 from the floor and committed four turnovers while the Titans made 4 of 6 shots and added three free throws. Alicia Tollefson began the surge with the Titans' lone 3-pointer of the half, and Kuehl capped it with two free throws.

UW-La Crosse closed to within six points on three occasions, but UW-Oshkosh sealed the win by making 12 of 16 free throws during the last 6:17, including 5 of 6 shooting by Kokta and 4 of 5 by Kuehl.

MaKenzie Miller paced UW-La Crosse with a game-high 14 points. Rachel Atchison added 13 points and three blocks for the Eagles, who also received eight points and five assists from Jenna Anderson.

The Eagles ended the game shooting 35.4 percent (17-48) from the field, 40 percent (4-10) from behind the 3-point line and 76.9 percent (10-13) from the free throw line.

UW-Oshkosh hosts UW-Stevens Point on Saturday (Jan. 24) in Kolf Sports Center. The Pointers defeated the Titans, 54-47, on Jan. 10 in Stevens Point.
