Titans Close 2014 With Rout Of Red Hawks

UW-Oshkosh won a fifth straight women's basketball game for the second time this season following its 75-38 non-conference victory over Ripon College on Wednesday (Dec. 31) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Titans, who improved their record to 10-1 with the win, took a 4-2 lead and held the advantage for the final 38:05 of play. UW-Oshkosh entered the New Year's Eve contest ranked 12th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com.

Ripon College (1-9) led only once in the contest, a 2-0 score created by a McKenzie Banasik layup on the game's first possession. The Red Hawks' lead didn't last long as UW-Oshkosh tied the score 51 seconds later and went ahead for good on its following possession.

UW-Oshkosh then scored 17 of the next 21 points to take a 21-6 lead with 6:14 left in the first half. The Titans' first 21 points featured seven points by Marissa Selner and six by Katelyn Kuehl.

UW-Oshkosh closed the opening period with an 11-4 scoring run to take a convincing 34-14 lead to intermission. The Titans shot only 35.5 percent (11-31) from the field in the first half, but they made 10 of 12 free throws and committed just two turnovers while limiting the Red Hawks to six field goals and a pair of free throws.

UW-Oshkosh, which has won 12 of its 15 meetings with Ripon College, led by 20-plus points the entire second half. Leading 50-26, the Titans scored 11 straight points, including six free throws by Emma Melotik, to take a 61-26 lead with 6:14 remaining.

The Titans' largest lead was 39 points, a 75-36 score with 30 seconds left.

UW-Oshkosh was led in scoring by the 12 points from Melotik, Katelyn Kuehl and Ashley Neustifter. Melotik tallied all of her points on 12 of 12 shooting from the free-throw line. The Titans also received 11 points from Selner.

UW-Oshkosh finished the contest with just nine turnovers and a 38-28 advantage in rebounds. Kuehl, Selner and Alex Richard paced the Titans with five rebounds apiece.

Ripon College was led in scoring by the eight points from Megan Jensen. The Red Hawks also received six points from Banasik and four points and a team-best six rebounds from Emma McDonald.

UW-Oshkosh converted 29 of 35 free throws (82.9 percent) while shooting 41.2 percent (21-51) from the field. The Titans made four of their 12 3-point shots (33.3 percent).

Ripon College, which suffered its seventh straight loss, shot 31.4 percent (16-51) from the field and 75 percent (6-8) from the free-throw stripe. The Red Hawks missed all nine of their 3-point attempts.

UW-Oshkosh plays UW-Superior for possession of first place in the WIAC standings on Saturday (Jan. 3) in Kolf Sports Center.
