Titans Have Little Trouble With Kohawks

The fifth-ranked UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team scored the game's first seven points and rolled to a 64-40 victory over Coe College (Iowa) on Sunday (Nov. 16) in Eau Claire.

Four Titans scored in double figures while UW-Oshkosh limited its opponent to under 37 percent shooting from the floor for the second straight game.

Taylor Schmidt led UW-Oshkosh (2-0) with 13 points, three steals and two assists. Eliza Campbell added 12 points and two rebounds, while Katelyn Kuehl had 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Alex Richard contributed 10 points and six rebounds.

Two layups by Richard and a 3-pointer by Ashley Neustifter on its first three possessions gave UW-Oshkosh a 7-0 lead just 91 seconds into play.

Coe College (0-2) cut its deficit to 9-6, but the Titans claimed the next eight points and held the Kohawks scoreless for more than eight minutes. Coe College didn't make its third field goal until 6:09 left in the first half.

Leading 17-11, UW-Oshkosh scored 13 of the next 15 points to take a 30-13 lead to intermission. The Titans forced 17 turnovers in the first half while holding Coe College to just 25 percent (5-20) shooting from the field.

The Kohawks scored six of the first seven points of the second half to cut UW-Oshkosh's lead to 31-19 with 16:08 remaining. The Titans responded with nine straight points to take a 40-19 advantage with 12:46 left.

UW-Oshkosh led by 18-plus points the rest of the way, including a 64-36 score with 2:59 to play.

Megan Hayes paced Coe College in scoring with 17 points. She also blocked five shots and grabbed three rebounds. The Kohawks also received nine points from Courteney  McCrary.

UW-Oshkosh finished the game shooting 38.5 percent (20-52) from the field and 71.4 percent (20-28) from the free-throw line. The Titans made four of their 12 three-point shots (33.3 percent).

Coe College concluded the game at 32.6 percent (15-46) shooting from the field. The Kohawks shot 61.5 percent from the free-throw stripe, but just 12.5 percent (2-16) behind the three-point arc.

UW-Oshkosh won the rebounding battle, 36-31, and owned nine less turnovers (14-23) than Coe College.

The Titans host Viterbo University in their home opener on Tuesday (Nov. 18) in Kolf Sports Center.
