Titans Trample Pointers In WIAC Tournament

Katelyn Kuehl totaled 17 points and five assists as UW-Oshkosh defeated UW-Stevens Point, 68-44, in a semifinal of the WIAC Women's Basketball Tournament held Thursday (Feb. 27) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Titans (23-3), ranked 14th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, will host the tournament's championship game on Saturday (March 1) at 3 p.m. UW-Superior (16-11) will be UW-Oshkosh's opponent after the Yellowjackets upset top-seeded UW-Whitewater, 84-63.

UW-Stevens Point had its 14-game win streak in the WIAC Tournament end. The Pointers (17-10) had captured six straight conference tournaments.

Kuehl made all six of her shots from the field while grabbing four rebounds. The Titans counted 19 assists, including seven by Ashley Neustifter. Sarah Stecker scored 12 points, as Marissa Selner contributed eight points, six rebounds and four steals.

UW-Oshkosh scored the first four points of the game before the Pointers came back with the next five. The Titans then went off for 11 straight points, with five different players scoring, to take a 15-5 lead.

Alicia Tollefson buried a high-arcing three-pointer before Kuehl finished a three-point play to make it 22-7 with 6:45 left in the opening half.

UW-Stevens Point closed the period with a 10-2 run. Myranda Tyler converted a pair of lay-ins to cut the Pointers' deficit to 30-23 at intermission.

The Titans came out firing in the second half, tallying 12 of the first 16 points. Selner hit a lay-up and a jumper to increase the lead. UW-Oshkosh held a 46-30 advantage with 12:36 to go.

Transition offense helped the Titans put the game out of reach. With seven minutes left, Taylor Schmidt stole the ball, drove to the hoop and made a shot while getting fouled. Morgan Kokta then turned a steal into a bucket to take the 61-39 lead with 4:54 remaining.

UW-Oshkosh compiled 49 percent (25-51) shooting, including 2-of-11 accuracy from three-point range (18 percent). The Titans made 16-of-23 free throws (70 percent) and achieved a 35-29 edge in rebounds.

The Titans committed just seven turnovers, while the Pointers had 17.

UW-Stevens Point shot 35 percent (18-52) from the field, 25 percent (3-12) behind the three-point arc and 71 percent (5-7) at the foul line.

Tyler led UW-Stevens Point with 11 points, while Kaitlyn Jacobs hauled in eight rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh won the two regular-season meetings between the teams, posting victories of 75-68 (overtime) on Jan. 15 and 57-53 on Feb. 19.
