Titans Encourage Fans To "Think Pink"

The UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team is asking all fans to "Think Pink" when the Titans host UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Feb. 9) in Kolf Sports Center.

The "Think Pink" initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year of the WBCA's "Think Pink" promotion a success. The 2008 initiative has already unified over 600 women's basketball teams for the cause.

In an effort to promote cancer awareness, all fans attending UW-Oshkosh's 1 p.m. game against UW-La Crosse are encouraged to wear pink. The first 100 fans wearing pink or making a donation to the American Cancer Society will receive a free-T-shirt.

The UW-Oshkosh and UW-La Crosse women's basketball teams will wear pink shoelaces and warm up in pink T-shirts. Both coaching staffs will wear a pink article of clothing to support the cause. All breast cancer survivors in attendance will be recognized at halftime.

Cancer effects numerous people in many different ways. The American Cancer Society Web site states that over one million people are diagnosed by some type of cancer each year. Approximately one out of every two American men and one out of every three American women will have some type of cancer at some point during their lifetime. Anyone can get cancer, but 77 percent of all cancers are diagnosed in people aged 55 and older.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation Web site, an estimated 200,000 women and 1,700 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Of these, an estimated 41,000 women and 450 men will die from the disease.

The NCAA has also joined the WBCA's "Think Pink" initiative by implementing the "Calling For A Cure" campaign. The promotion includes all NCAA women's basketball officials blowing a pink whistle during games played Feb. 8-17.

Titans' 2007-08 Season Preview

With just one senior returning for the second consecutive season, head coach Terri Schumacher faces her biggest challenge yet as UW-Oshkosh looks to get better on a game-by-game basis during the 2007-08 women’s basketball season.

Schumacher, who was a NCAA Division III All-American as a member of the Titans’ 1985 WIAC championship team, will try to improve on her 27-24 coaching record in her third season at the helm. UW-Oshkosh posted an 8-16 record (4-12 WIAC) last year after going 19-8 and claiming a share of the conference title in 2006.

All-WIAC first team guard Becky Knapp departs after being the Titans’ second-leading scorer last season. She averaged 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in her senior year. Knapp started 57 games while scoring 839 points and reeling in 422 rebounds over the past four years.

In senior guard Whitney Tyriver (Oshkosh) and junior forward Jessica Abitz (Franksville), UW-Oshkosh returns two players with starting experience from last season.

Tyriver is the lone senior on the squad and earned All-WIAC first team honors last season after averaging 15.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest. She started all 24 games last year and shot 87 percent from the free-throw line while recording team highs with 74 assists and 43 steals. In 2006, Tyriver started all 27 contests and averaged 6.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. In 2005, Tyriver started 10 games and averaged 3.8 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. She enters the 2008 season with 666 career points.

Abitz started six of the 24 games that she played in last season and averaged 4.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per contest. In 2006, Abitz played in 10 games and averaged 1.6 points per contest.

Sophomore guard Beth Hebl (Brookfield) returns after playing in 23 games last season. She averaged 1.8 points and 1.4 rebounds per contest.

The team gladly welcomes back sophomore center Beth Garman (Lake Mills), who missed the 2007 season due to an injury. In 2006, Garman played in 27 games and averaged 2.2 points and 1.5 rebounds per outing.

This year's roster also includes freshmen forwards Jessica Baehman (Oshkosh), Lydia Falk (Lodi) and Amber Goljenboom (Pickett). Goljenboom joins the Titans as a transfer from UW-Whitewater.

The rest of the team is made up of freshmen guards Amanda Aubry (De Pere), Erin Baganz (Ashwaubenon), Kayla Bird (Boyceville), Michelle Boeder (Oshkosh), Laura Ebbens (Appleton), Teresa Green (Waupaca), Tiffany Pugh (Sturtevant) and Rachel Williquette (Howard).

UW-Oshkosh lost six letter winners from last season and has to replace 61 percent of its points and 70 percent of its rebounds from a year ago. These figures point to a year in which the Titans will be looking to develop as a team after a long stretch of conference dominance. In the previous 14 seasons, UW-Oshkosh has compiled a record of 313-76, with a minimum of 19 victories in 13 of those years.

UW-Oshkosh has claimed at least a share of the 10 WIAC titles in the past 17 seasons. The Titans have also made 10 appearances in the NCAA Division III Championship, with visits in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000. The Titans captured the NCAA Division III title in 1996.
