Ranked Tommies Upend Titans Twice

UW-Oshkosh was limited to nine hits as nationally ranked University of St. Thomas (Minn.) swept a softball doubleheader from the Titans on Sunday (May 1) in St. Paul, Minn.

University of St. Thomas (35-5), ranked 16th in the NCAA Division III by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, defeated UW-Oshkosh (25-11) by scores of 8-0 in six innings during the first game and 7-2 in the nightcap. The games closed the regular season for both teams.

Two University of St. Thomas pitchers combined for a one-hitter in the opener, and University of St. Thomas broke a 1-1 tie in the second contest with six runs on two home runs during the fourth inning.

KatieJo Delisle, Micaela Trainor and Brenna Walek each hit home runs on the day for the Tommies, while Melissa Barry combined to go 5-for-5 at the plate.

In the first game, UW-Oshkosh starting pitcher Sara Brunlieb and University of St. Thomas starter Kierstin Anderson-Glass were locked in a scoreless duel until Barry hit a two-out, run-scoring single in the third inning.

Walek hit a three-run home run to ignite the Tommies' six-run fourth inning. Ellie Wachman scored on a squeeze bunt before Micaela Trainor delivered a two-run double that gave University of St. Thomas a 7-0 advantage.

The Tommies ended the game by the eight-run rule, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Morgan Murphy in the sixth inning.

Anderson-Glass, who didn't allow a hit until Erika Berry singled with one out in the fourth inning, earned the win. She pitched the first five innings, striking out six without issuing a walk.

Jessica Eppenberger pitched a perfect sixth inning for the Tommies.

Brunlieb (13-5) suffered the loss after giving up seven runs on 11 hits in four innings pitched.

In the second game, the teams combined to strand four runners on base during the first two innings before UW-Oshkosh broke through in the third frame.

Lauren Torborg drove in the Titans' first run of the day on a two-out single in the third inning, but the Tommies answered with a run in the home half of the third frame on a bunt single by Trainor.

After Delisle, the University of St. Thomas starting pitcher, retired the Titans in order in the fourth inning, the Tommies erupted for six runs on a pair of homers off of Titans starting pitcher Clare Robbe in the bottom of the fourth frame.

Delisle hit a two-run home run and Trainor launched a grand slam before the Tommies recorded an out in the decisive fourth inning.

UW-Oshkosh's Abby Menting hit a run-scoring triple with two outs in the seventh inning to cap the scoring.

Anderson-Glass, Barry, Meg DuPuis and Trainor each collected two of the Tommies' 12 hits.

Berry paced the Titans by going 3-for-3 with a double.

Delisle picked up the win in the pitcher's circle for the Tommies after allowing one run on three hits in four innings pitched. She struck out two and walked one.

Murphy, who tossed the final three innings for University of St. Thomas, gave up one run on five hits with one strikeout.

Robbe (7-3) suffered the complete-game loss for the Titans. She recorded two strikeouts against one walk.

UW-Oshkosh will open the five-team WIAC Championship against UW-La Crosse on Friday (May 6) in Eau Claire. The second-seeded Titans swept a doubleheader against the third-seeded Eagles (25-12) on April 17 in Oshkosh.
