Titans Successful Against Opponents From Maine

Lauren Torborg went a combined 6-for-8 at the plate as the UW-Oshkosh softball team collected 27 hits during a pair of victories on Tuesday (March 22) in Clermont, Fla.

Paige Giese hit a three-run home run and combined with Clare Robbe on a four-hitter during the Titans' 7-0 victory over first-time opponent University of Maine at Farmington. UW-Oshkosh (6-3) then amassed a season-high 16 hits in its 8-1 triumph over Bowdoin College (Maine).

Torborg went 3-for-4 with one double in both games to increase her team-leading batting average to .560 on the season, while Titan pitchers did not allow an extra-base hit in either contest.

In the victory over the University of Maine at Farmington, Giese and Beavers starting pitcher Kailyn Hill combined to strand nine runners through three scoreless innings before UW-Oshkosh pulled away with one run in the fourth frame, four in the fifth and two in the sixth.

The Beavers squandered a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the third inning. After its first two batters reached base, the University of Maine at Farmington sacrificed the runners to second and third base. The Titans worked out of the jam when third baseman Erika Berry scooped up a ground ball and nabbed a runner at home for the second out. During the ensuing plate appearance, second baseman Hayden Krueger caught Haley Felkel trying to steal home for the third out.

Kaitlyn Krol led off the UW-Oshkosh fourth inning with a double and advanced to third base on an error before Brianna Witter delivered a two-out, run-scoring single to open the scoring.

Giese, making her first start in the pitcher's circle for UW-Oshkosh, retired the Beavers in order during the home half of the fourth inning and launched a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to extend the Titan lead to 5-0.

With two outs and the bases empty in the fifth inning, Torborg singled, stole second base and scored on a single by Caitlin Hoerning before Krol walked ahead of Giese's big hit.

The University of Maine at Farmington (1-6) had two runners on base with two outs against Giese in the fifth inning, but Ashley Gleason flied out to end the Beavers' last scoring threat.

UW-Oshkosh loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning, and Hoerning drove in her second and third runs of the game with a single.

Giese (1-0) earned her first victory in the circle, tossing five innings with three strikeouts and yielding four hits.

Robbe pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts to preserve the Titans' third shutout of the season.

Hill took the loss for the Beavers, pitching all seven innings and allowing 11 hits. She issued seven walks and struck out three.

In the win over Bowdoin College, five Titans had at least two hits and Sara Brunlieb (4-2) picked up the victory in the pitcher's circle.

Berry joined Torborg with three hits for UW-Oshkosh, while Giese, Hoerning and Witter each added two. The Titans also recorded five stolen bases, including two by Hoerning.

Brunlieb retired the first nine Polar Bears in order before the Titans erupted for five runs on six hits in the third inning.

Berry commenced a string of seven straight UW-Oshkosh baserunners when she singled with one out in the third inning. She stole second and came in to score the first run of the game on a double by Krueger.

Abby Menting walked and Torborg followed with the first of four consecutive run-scoring hits as Hoerning, Witter and Giese each singled to extend UW-Oshkosh's lead to 5-0.

Bowdoin College (7-5) got an unearned run back in the fourth inning on a run-scoring single by Caroline Rice, who had two her team's four hits. After her throwing error set up the Polar Bears' run, Brunlieb escaped the inning with three straight outs.

UW-Oshkosh tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth inning. The Titans took a 6-1 lead following an errant throw by the Bowdoin College catcher on a double steal by Hoerning and Torborg, and Giese drove in Hoerning with a two-out single.

Menting's two-out, run-scoring double in the sixth inning capped the scoring.

Brunlieb scattered four hits while registering five strikeouts against one walk. Brunlieb has not allowed an earned run in her last five appearances (27.1 innings pitched).

Julia Geaumont suffered the pitching loss for Bowdoin College. Seven of the eight runs she ceded were earned as she pitched all six innings, striking out four and walking one.

UW-Oshkosh is back in action on Thursday (March 24) against Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Fontbonne University (Mo.).
