Brunlieb Allows Just Two Hits In Shutout Victory

Sara Brunlieb pitched a two-hitter and matched her career high with 10 strikeouts to lead the nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh softball team to a 2-0 win over Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday (Feb. 27) in Marquette, Mich.

UW-Oshkosh (2-1), ranked 25th in the NCAA Division III by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, supported Brunlieb's gem with a pair of runs in the fourth inning.

Brunlieb (1-1) allowed singles in the second and fourth innings to Concordia University Wisconsin's Carly Sobrilsky, but the Falcons advanced just one runner into scoring position all game.

Brunlieb, who registered her sixth career shutout, struck out the side in the top of the first inning, but she yielded a hit to Sobrilsky to lead off the second frame. Sobrilsky was sacrificed to second base and reached third with one out after a passed ball. However, Brunlieb escaped the threat by recording a strikeout and a groundout.

Hayden Krueger led off UW-Oshkosh's decisive fourth inning with a ground-rule double. Abby Menting followed with a single and Brianna Witter drove in the eventual winning run with a groundout. Kaitlyn Krol provided an insurance run with a two-out triple.

After allowing a two-out hit to Sobrilsky in the fourth inning, Brunlieb set down the final 10 Falcons in order.

Caitlin Hoerning and Krueger led UW-Oshkosh with two hits apiece.

Concordia University Wisconsin starting pitcher Melissa Perkins suffered the loss after yielding both runs on five hits in five innings in the circle.

UW-Oshkosh concludes its trip to Marquette by playing Lakeland College at 9 a.m. on Sunday (Feb. 28).
