Titans Cited For Academic Success

The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) recognized five members of the UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team for their academic and athletic success during the 2014 season.

Named to the organization's NCAA Division III All-Academic Team were Titans Jordan Carpenter, Mike Foust, Charlend Howard, Roberto Lara and Joe Zack. All five runners helped UW-Oshkosh to a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional held at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne on Nov. 15.

Carpenter finished 45th at the NCAA Division III Championship on Nov. 22 in Mason, Ohio, and fifth at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional. The Titans also had Zack finish 32nd, Howard 36th, Lara 51st and Foust 60th at the regional.

Carpenter is a major in economics, Foust in accounting/finance, Howard in kinesiology & sociology, Lara in mathematics & secondary education, and Zack in biology.

In order to be eligible for All-Academic recognition, honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of least 3.30 and finish in the top 25 percent of finishers at regionals. A total of 247 NCAA Division III student-athletes were honored by the USTFCCCA, including 20 from the WIAC.

The entire UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team was also recognized for its excellence in the classroom. Last fall, the Titans registered a 3.13 cumulative grade point average while also finishing fourth at the WIAC Championship.

To be considered an All-Academic Team, programs must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.10 or greater and competed in at least five different meets with at least five runners representing their school at each. A total of 152 NCAA Division III schools were honored by the USTFCCCA, including six from the WIAC.

Grant Wintheiser of St. Olaf College (Minn.) was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year while North Central College (Ill.) was selected Scholar Team of the Year.
