Titans Run To 11th-Place Notre Dame Invitational Finish

Jordan Carpenter finished ninth for the UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team at the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational held Friday (Oct. 3) in South Bend, Ind.

As a team, the Titans scored 287 points to finish 11th in a meet that featured 23 squads from NCAA Division I, II and III, as well as Canada. UW-Oshkosh entered the competition ranked 28th in the NCAA Division III by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Carpenter finished the water logged five-mile course in a time of 24:49. Due to a downpour of rain on Thursday (Oct. 2) and Friday morning, conditions were not ideal for this year's participants. Carpenter finished 76th in last year's race.

Luis Vargas of Elon College (N.C.) was the individual champion with a time of 23:30. Alan Peterson of Grand Valley State University (Mich.) finished second among the meet's 181 competitors with a time of 23:59, while Michael Castel of Southern Illinois University placed third in 24:02.

Paced by Peterson, Grand Valley State University claimed the team title with 71 points. North Central College (Ill.) finished second with 82 points, while Southern Illinois University ranked third with 198, University of Windsor (Ontario, Canada) fourth with 192 and Duquesne University (Pa.) fifth with 199.

Rounding out the top 10 teams were sixth-place St. Louis University (Mo.) with 219 points, seventh-place University of Pittsburgh (Pa.) with 220, eighth-place University of Northern Iowa with 224, ninth-place Wabash College (Ind.) with 271 and 10th-place Oakland University (Mich.) with 276.

In addition to Carpenter, UW-Oshkosh received scoring performances from Charlend Howard, Ryne Scopp, Tyler Miletti and Mike Foust. Howard finished 46th with a time of 25:14, while Scopp placed 71st in 25:32, Miletti 82nd in 25:38 and Foust 90th in 25:44.

The Titans also had Roberto Lara finish 91st in 25:45, Joe Zack 93rd in 25:47 and Luke Hill 163rd in 27:13.

Runners, who didn't compete for UW-Oshkosh at the Notre Dame Invitational, will perform Saturday (Oct. 8) at the Lawrence University Invitational in Appleton. Following that meet, UW-Oshkosh is off until it hosts the AAE Invitational on Oct. 18 at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne.
