Ten Titans Earn Men’s Track & Field All-Academic Awards

UW-Oshkosh had 10 members of its men's track & field program collect All-Academic honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Named to the organization's NCAA Division III Men's Track & Field All-Academic Team for the 2020-21 school year were Titans Mitchell Bradford, Jamyle Brantley, Jason Ford, Andrew George, Rashaad Henderson, Benjamin Jung, Joseph Kean, Bo Koehn, Jason Myrick and Eli Tranel.

The USTFCCCA honored 450 student-athletes for their academic and athletic accomplishments, including Brantley who was recognized for the third straight year. George and Tranel were also a member of last year's All-Academic Team.

Bradford, a sophomore, owns a 3.948 cumulative grade-point average as a political science major. He finished fifth in the 5,000-meter run (15:04.72) at the WIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship held May 7-8 in River Falls. Bradford ranked 22nd nationally in the 3,000-meter run (8:38.48), 33rd in the 5,000-meter run (15:44.55) and 47th in the mile run (4:21.20) during the indoor season and 32nd in the 5,000-meter run (14:39.89) outdoors.

Brantley, a junior, possesses a 3.532 GPA as a physical education major. He earned All-America honors with his fifth-place leap of 23-4 1/2 in the long jump at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship held May 27-29 in Greensboro, N.C. Brantley also finished second in the long jump (23-0 1/2) at the WIAC Outdoor Championship. During the indoor season he ranked fourth nationally in the long jump (23-4).

Ford, a sophomore, holds a 3.898 GPA as a music major. He ranked 27th nationally in the 3,000-meter run (8:40.09) during the indoor season.

George, a junior, has a 3.432 GPA as a major in broadfield social science. He earned All-America honors with his sixth-place time of 9:17.88 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Division III Outdoor Championship. George won the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:13.60) and finished eighth in the 1,500-meter run (3:57.28) at the WIAC Outdoor Championship. During the indoor season he ranked eighth nationally in the mile run (4:13.64), 17th in the 3,000-meter run (8:36.02) and 49th in the 5,000-meter run (15:21.59).

Henderson, a freshman, owns a 3.366 GPA as an engineering major. He ranked 34th nationally in the 200-meter dash (22.53 seconds) during the indoor season.

Jung possesses a 3.427 GPA as a secondary education major, including a perfect 4.00 GPA during his last 31 credits earned. The junior ranked 28th nationally in the 200-meter dash (22.49 seconds) during the indoor season.

Kean, a freshman, holds a 3.868 GPA as a business major. He ranked 31st nationally in the 60-meter dash (6.99 seconds) during the indoor season.

Koehn, a freshman, has a 3.864 GPA as a major in biology. He was a member of UW-Oshkosh's 1,600-meter relay team that finished 10th (3:14.15) at the Division III Outdoor Championship.

Myrick owns a 3.830 GPA as a kinesiology major, including a perfect 4.00 GPA during his last 73 credits earned. The junior ranked 42nd nationally in the 35-pound weight throw (52-10 3/4) during the indoor season.

Tranel, a freshman, possesses a 3.921 GPA as a kinesiology major. He ranked 12th nationally in the pole vault (15-5) during the indoor season and 28th (15-5 1/2) outdoors.

Matthew Wilkinson of Carleton College (Minn.) was named the USTFCCCA's NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track & Field National Scholar Track Athlete of the Year. The association also chose Steven Hermsen of Carroll University as its NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track & Field National Scholar Field Athlete of the Year. 

To qualify for the USTFCCCA's Track & Field All-Academic Team, student-athletes must own a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 and have either competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship or finished the regular season ranked in the national top 50 of an individual event or in the national top 35 of a relay event on the official NCAA Descending Order list.

UW-La Crosse led Division III with 22 All-Academic award winners. University of St. Thomas (Minn.) followed the Eagles with 16 honorees while Wartburg College (Iowa) had 15 and both Nebraska Wesleyan University and UW-Stout 14 apiece.

UW-Oshkosh and its seven other WIAC associates combined for 81 All-Academic selections.

Wartburg College was named the USTFCCCA's NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track & Field National Scholar Team of the Year. The Knights compiled a 3.20 GPA while finishing first at the national outdoor championship.

Bard College (N.Y.) earned a Division III-leading GPA of 3.76. The Raptors were followed by the 3.722 GPA of Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.).   

To be in contention for the USTFCCCA's National Scholar Team of the Year, a program must finish highly at the respective national championship meet and have at least a 3.10 team GPA.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the cancellation of the indoor national championship, the USTFCCCA didn't present awards for the NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track & Field National Scholar Team and Athletes of the Year.

Head coach Justin Kinseth and his UW-Oshkosh team finished third at both the WIAC and NCAA Division III outdoor championships during the 2021 season.
