Wilburn's Record-Breaking Measurement Leads Titans At Red Hawk Opener

Sophomore Jonathan Wilburn broke UW-Oshkosh's 19-year-old indoor record in the triple jump as the Titans won nine events at the Ripon College Men's Track & Field Red Hawk Opener held Saturday (Jan. 25) in Ripon.

Wilburn, who earned All-America honors with his fifth-place finish in the triple jump at last year's NCAA Division III Indoor Championship, defeated eight other contestants on Saturday with his winning and nation-leading measurement of 50-3 1/4. Shannon King held the previous UW-Oshkosh triple jump record of 49-9 3/4 since March 10, 2001.  

UW-Oshkosh had four other place winners in Saturday's triple jump event as Mory Bamba finished second with a distance of 47-0 3/4, Joshua Jones fourth at 44-8, Jamyle Brantley fifth at 43-10 3/4 and Adam Tallman seventh at 42-11. Bamba's mark ranks eighth in Division III this season.

Benjamin Jung won two running events for the Titans. He defeated 25 other competitors in the 60-meter dash with his sprint of 6.94 seconds and 32 other participants in the 200-meter dash with his time of 22.41 seconds. Jung's time in the 60-meter dash is the eighth fastest in the country.

The Titans also had Robert Ogbuli finish second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.96 seconds, Ethan Burch third in 7.09, Eli Tranel fourth in 7.16, Jeff Schneider fifth in 7.22 and Cornelius Woods seventh in 7.28.

UW-Oshkosh also had Burch place second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.50 seconds, Aaron McCarroll-Richardson third in 22.74, Ogbuli fourth in 22.77, Adrian Girone fifth in 23.14, Todd Beadle seventh in 23.21 and Evan Wendland eighth in 23.43. Burch's time is the 17th fastest in the nation.

Other UW-Oshkosh winning performances belonged to Bamba with a time of 8.557 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, Amitai Wheat in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.02, Justin Rivers in the high jump with a leap of 6-9, Nick Tegtmeier in the shot put with a throw of 53-3 and Joe Vils in the pole vault with a height of 14-11. Rivers' measurement in the high jump, which defeated fourth other performers, is the seventh best in Division III this season.

The Titans took first place among six squads in the 1,600-meter relay as Beadle, Burch, Wheat and Woods ran to a time of 3:23.62, the ninth-best performance in the country.

UW-Oshkosh received five place-winning efforts in both the shot put and 35-pound weight throw.

In addition to Tegtmeier's winning cast in the shot put, the Titans also had Jackson Sheckler finish third at 52-4 1/2, Colton Wasieleski fourth at 50-5 1/2, Jack Malloy fifth at 45-3 1/2 and Jacob Dennison eighth at 37-8 3/4 among the event's 12 competitors.

The 35-pound weight throw featured Sheckler finishing second with a distance of 51-5 1/2, Dennison third at 48-6, Malloy fourth at 47-3, Tegtmeier fifth at 45-9 1/4 and Seth Schilling sixth at 45-1 3/4.

Besides Bamba's victory in the 60-meter hurdles, UW-Oshkosh also had Morgan Malm finish third with a time of 8.768 seconds and Kunmi Olatunde fifth in 8.80 among the event's 11 participants.

Wheat's victory among the 23 competitors in the 800-meter run was followed by two UW-Oshkosh teammates as Nick Engels finished second with a time of 2:21.80 and Noah O'Neill sixth in 2:03.57.

The win by Vils in the pole vault was followed by Titans Zach Emmer and Brant Sanderfoot. Emmer finished second among the event's seven contestants with a height of 13-11 1/4 and Sanderfoot fourth at 10-6.

UW-Oshkosh also had four place-winning efforts in the long jump as Brantley finished second with a mark of 23-4 1/2, McCarroll-Richardson third at 23-0, Roman Hill fifth at 22-4 1/2 and Wilburn eighth at 21-4 1/4.

The mile run featured three UW-Oshkosh place winners as Andrew Muskevitsch finished third with a time of 4:34.01, Jason Ford fourth in 4:35.80 and Joe Kehoe seventh in 4:41.59.

UW-Oshkosh totaled 268 points, including 36 in the 200-meter dash, 35 in the 60-meter dash and 29 in the triple jump, to acquire the team title. Viterbo University finished second to the Titans in the eight-team meet with 87 points while Ripon College placed third with 85 and Lawrence University fourth with 55.

The Titans will compete Friday (Jan. 31) at the UW-Whitewater "Squig" Converse Invitational.
