Last Chance Meets End Regular Season For Titans

Jack Flynn won the discus at the Augustana College (Ill.) Twilight Invitational and Jonathan Wilburn the triple jump at the UW-La Crosse Final Qualifier to lead UW-Oshkosh's list of place winners at men's track & field meets held Thursday (May 16).

The last chance qualifying meets closed the regular season for the Titans, who look to send numerous competitors to next weekend's NCAA Division III Championship in Geneva, Ohio. Selections to the national meet will be announced Saturday (May 18).

UW-Oshkosh had four top-eight finishers at the Augustana College Twilight Invitational, including Flynn who defeated 36 other contestants in the discus with his winning measurement of 174-2. Flynn ranks second in the event nationally following his career-best throw. UW-Eau Claire's David Kornack finished second to Flynn with a distance of 171-7.

The Titans had a pair of place winners in the shot put as Nick Tegtmeier finished third and Jackson Sheckler sixth with measurements of 54-0 1/2 and 52-2 3/4, respectively. Tegtmeier ranks 12th nationally after his toss while Sheckler continues to rank eighth after recording a distance of 55-0 earlier this month. UW-Eau Claire's Kornack won the shot put with a mark of 62-8 1/2.

UW-Oshkosh's Bailey Quinn contributed a sixth-place measurement of 180-6 in the hammer throw. He currently ranks 20th nationally with a season-best distance of 187-7.

UW-Oshkosh tallied 10 top-eight finishes at the UW-La Crosse Final Qualifier, including Wilburn who defeated 12 other participants in the triple jump with his skip of 48-8. UW-Stevens Point's Tom Kohn finished second with a measurement of 48-1 1/4 and UW-Oshkosh's Jared Benson fifth at 44-11. Wilburn ranks third in the event nationally after recording a mark of 49-6 1/4 earlier this year.

Titan Justin Rivers placed second in the high jump with a height of 6-9. His leap moved him to 12th in the national listings. Christian Beamer of Saint Mary's University (Minn.) won the event of 10 contestants with a mark of 6-9.

UW-Oshkosh's Andrew George also contributed a second-place finish. He was the runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with the nation's 41st-best time of 9:21.43. UW-Stevens Point's Axel Treinen defeated 13 other runners with his winning time of 9:19.11.

UW-Oshkosh had a pair of place winners in the 800-meter run as Steven Potter finished third and Nick Freitag fourth with times of 1:51.86 and 1:52.02, respectively. Both Titans improved their national rankings as Potter now lists 16th and Freitag 19th. Shane Streich, running unattached, won the race with a time of 1:50.05.

The Titans also received a third-place distance of 23-1 3/4 in the long jump from Roman Hill and eighth-place times of 10.86 seconds in the 100-meter dash from Benjamin Jung and 17.27 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles from Abel Christiansen. Hill's measurement ranks 44th in the nation.

In the relays, UW-Oshkosh improve their national position to third at 400 meters and fifth at 1,600. The Titans placed third in the 400-meter race as Jung, Christian Lopez, Aaron McCarroll-Richardson and Robert Ogbuli ran to a school-record time of 40.81 seconds and second in the 1,600-meter event as Freitag, Todd Beadle, Ryan Powers and Amitai Wheat posted a time of 3:12.70.
