Titans Win Three Events At Midwest ELITE Invitational

UW-Oshkosh's Devan Gertschen leaped to this season's third-highest pole vault measurement in the NCAA Division III with his winning performance at the Midwest ELITE Men's Track & Field Invitational held Saturday (Feb. 10) in Whitewater.

Gertschen recorded a first-place height of 16-4 3/4 to defeat 24 other contestants, including UW-La Crosse's Wes Evansen who finished second at 16-0.

Ryan Powers was involved in the Titans' two other first-place finishes. He outran 36 other participants in the 200-meter dash with his time of 22.06 seconds and joined Christian Lopez, Nick Freitag and Justin Skinkis to defeat 13 other challengers in the 1,600-meter relay with their time of 3:22.67. 

Lopez also placed in two other events and both Powers and Skinkis one apiece for the Titans. Lopez finished fourth in the 200- and fifth in the 60-meter dashes with times of 22.37 and 7.01 seconds, respectively, while Powers and Skinkis both placed sixth with times of 7.07 seconds in the 60-meter dash and 1:58.69 in the 800-meter run, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh finished third among the eight competing teams with 84.5 points. UW-La Crosse scored 140 points to claim the team title while UW-Whitewater placed second with 97.5, Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.) fourth with 84, UW-Stevens Point fifth with 77 and Benedictine University (Ill.) sixth with 59.

Carson was also a multiple place winner for the Titans. He finished second in the long jump with a distance of 22-8 and sixth in the high jump with a leap of 6-5 1/2.

UW-Oshkosh had a pair of third-place performances as Erik Schwandt ran to a time of 6.94 seconds in the 60-meter dash and Jordan Boyd marked a height of 6-5 1/2 in the high jump.

The Titans also received a fourth-place time of 1:55.65 in the 800-meter run from Joe Zack, a fifth-place measurement of 55-10 1/4 in the 35-pound weight throw from Bailey Quinn and a sixth-place leap of 22-4 1/4 in the long jump from Demetri Lomnick.       

UW-Oshkosh hosts its third and final meet of the indoor season next Saturday (Feb. 17) in Kolf Sports Center.
