Titans Finish Third At Cardinal Opener

UW-Oshkosh's Devan Gertschen, Bailey Quinn and Erik Schwandt all improved their national performance list ranking with their achievements at the North Central College Cardinal Opener on Friday (Jan. 19) in Naperville, Ill.

North Central College, aided by 39 points in the 5,000- and 38 in the 3,000-meter runs, won the six-team meet with 227.5 points. The defending NCAA Division III co-champion Cardinals were followed by second-place UW-Whitewater with 181 points, third-place UW-Oshkosh with 109.5, fourth-place Carthage College with 62, fifth-place St. Norbert College with 12 and sixth-place Illinois Tech with 4.

Gertschen defeated 15 other contestants in the pole vault with his height of 16-2 3/4. His measurement ranks as the third best in the NCAA Division III this season. UW-Oshkosh's Joe Vils finished fifth in the event with a mark of 14-3 1/4.

Schwandt outran 24 participants in the 60-meter dash with his time of 6.92 seconds. He recorded a preliminary time of 6.91 seconds for the fourth-fastest mark in the country this season. Titan Christian Lopez placed second to Schwandt with a time of 6.99 seconds.

Quinn earned the nation's eighth-best mark in the 35-pound weight throw with his distance of 58-1 3/4. He captured first place in the event by ousting 16 other throwers.

UW-Oshkosh's fourth and final victory during the meet belonged to Ryan Powers, who won the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.30 seconds. Lopez finished second among the event's 35 other runners with a time of 22.53 seconds.

The Titans had two of the three finishers in the long jump as Demetri Lomnick placed second with a leap of 21-8 1/4 and Bryce Mancheski third with a mark of 21-5 1/4.

UW-Oshkosh also received a third-place time of 1:57.53 in the 800-meter run from Justin Skinkis and a fourth-place time of 4:32.79 in the mile run from Jacob Rost

The Titans owned a trio of sixth-place listings as Joshua Jones skipped to a measurement of 42-9 3/4 in the triple jump while Brandt Beukema and Todd Beadle ran to times of 8.71 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles and 52.29 seconds in the 400-meter run, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh's quartet of Beadle, Powers, Chris Hess and Nolan Peterson contributed a third-place time of 3:26.25 in the 1,600-meter relay.

The Titans compete at Carthage College's Tadd Metzger Invitational next Friday (Jan. 26) in Kenosha.
