Titans Defeat Vikings In Season Debut

Hunter Effa and Garrison Griest both won one event while placing second in another to lead the UW-Oshkosh men's track & field team to a 97-42 season-opening victory over Lawrence University on Friday (Jan. 13) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh owned the winner in 12 of the 14 events, including the long jump where Effa leaped to a distance of 22-1 and the 60-meter hurdles where Griest ran to a time of 8.44 seconds. Effa and Griest earned their second-place listings with performances of 7.21 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles and 22.61 seconds in the 200-meter dash, respectively.

The Titans captured six other races as Nolan Peterson won the 60-meter dash in 7.13 seconds, Ryan Powers the 200-meter dash in 22.51 seconds, Todd Beadle the 400-meter run in 51.15 seconds, Derrick Rufer the 800-meter run in 4:09.43 and Roberto Lara the mile run in 4:09.43.

UW-Oshkosh took the 1,600-meter relay with a first-place time of 3:27.68.

The Titans established winning marks in four other field events, including the high jump where Dakota Griffith and Carson Weber both leaped to a height of 6-0 3/4.

UW-Oshkosh also had Devan Gertschen win the pole vault with a height of 15-6 1/4. Collin Kempka the shot put with a distance of 40-0 1/2 and Bailey Quinn the 35-pound weight throw with a measurement of 47-0 3/4. Kempka supplied additional points for the Titans with his second-place cast of 45-7 3/4 in the 35-pound weight throw.

The Titans had four other second-place finishers on the track as Jacob Isaac ran 51.92 seconds in the 400-meter run, Nick Engels 2:05.11 in the 800-meter run, Justin Skinkis 4:26.17 in the mile run and Morgan Malm 8.48 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles.

Second-place results in the field belonged to Mitchell Hasey and Joe Vils in the pole vault with a height of 14-6 1/4, Bryce Mancheski in the long jump with a distance of 21-0 1/2 and Jared Benson in the triple jump with a mark of 41-2 1/4 in the triple jump.

UW-Oshkosh's third-place listings included the times of 22.62 seconds by Christian Lopez in the 200-meter dash, 2:09.12 by Kyle Peotter in the 800-meter run, 4:29.03 by Joe Zack in the mile run and 9.30 seconds by John Puffer in the 60-meter hurdles.

The Titans also had Weber and Jake Skoien both finish third with measurements of 20-2 1/2 in the long jump and 5-10 3/4 in the high jump, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh will compete at the North Central College Cardinal Opener next Friday (Jan. 20) in Naperville, Ill.
