Titans Place Fourth At WIAC Indoor Championship

Roberto Lara won the mile run and was among four multiple UW-Oshkosh place winners at the WIAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship held Friday and Saturday (Feb. 27-28) in Platteville.

Lara defeated 13 other contestants in the mile run with his time of 4:11.80. His performance edged the second-place time of 4:12.23 by UW-Platteville's Joel Walden.

Lara also finished sixth in the 800-meter run with an effort of 1:55.73.

UW-La Crosse scored 161 points to win its 14th straight WIAC indoor title and 40th overall. The Eagles were followed by second-place UW-Eau Claire with 137 points, third-place UW-Whitewater with 106.5 and fourth-place UW-Oshkosh with 88. The Titans placed third in last year's meet with 109 points.

Rounding out the finishes in the nine-team meet were fifth-place UW-Platteville with 69 points, sixth-place UW-Stevens Point with 59.5, seventh-place UW-Stout with 40, eighth-place UW-River Falls with 25 and ninth-place UW-Superior with 14.

In addition to Lara, other multiple place winners for the Titans were Naji Allan, Nick Grosskopf and Mike Heinz.

Allan placed third in the 60-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash with times of 6.91 and 22.51 seconds, respectively, while Grosskopf threw to a third-place distance of 57-3 1/2 in the 35-pound weight throw and a fifth-place mark of 53-7 in the shot put. Heinz recorded a fifth-place measurement of 55-1 in the 35-pound weight throw and a seventh-place toss of 52-3 3/4 in the shot put.

Brian Beaudo was involved in two of UW-Oshkosh's four second-place finishes. He posted a time of 49.38 in the 400-meter run while helping Kallen Bentz, Dan Trimner and Reid Zanoya record a time of 3:19.54 in the 1,600-meter relay.

Also finishing second were Zachary Baehman in the shot put with a mark of 56-10 and Derek Johnsrud in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:55.66.

UW-Oshkosh's remaining fifth-place efforts belonged to Zanoya in the 400-meter run with a time of 50.23 seconds, Kevin Caufield in the heptathlon with 4,721 points and Joe Zack in the mile run with a time of 4:13.84.

Bentz finished eighth in the 400-meter run with a time of 50.37 seconds while the Titans' distance medley relay team of Garrison Griest, Charlie Scott, Ryne Scopp and Justin Skinkis placed sixth with a time of 10:37.88.

UW-Oshkosh competes in last chance qualifiers at Carthage College on Friday (March 6) and UW-Stevens Point on Saturday (March 7) before participating at the NCAA Division III Championship on March 13-14 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
