Eagles Hold Off Titans

Edgewood College took a one-point lead after the doubles competition and held on for a 5-4 victory over the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team on Sunday (April 19) in Madison.

The Eagles (12-10) grabbed a 2-1 advantage on wins by Patrick Lagman and Austin Papenthien at No. 1 doubles and Jaime Benavides and Evan Stone at No. 3 doubles. Both victories were close as Lagman and Papenthien defeated Mike Gillespie and Aidan Sauberlich, 9-8 (7-4), while Benavides and Stone ousted David La Grange and Logan Zastrow, 8-6.

The No. 2 doubles contest went to UW-Oshkosh (6-15) as Vincent Gorski and Adam Martin outscored Brian Davenport and Michael Wanta, 8-2.

The teams split their six singles contests, with Edgewood College winning flights one through three and UW-Oshkosh winning flights four through six.

Martin gave UW-Oshkosh the win at No. 4 singles with his 6-1, 6-1 victory over Stone.

Also earning individual wins for the Titans were La Grange in the fifth flight and David Leffler in the sixth. La Grange defeated Wanta, 7-5, 6-1, while Leffler ousted Benavides, 6-3, 6-4.  

Papenthien, Lagman and Davenport were the individual winners for Edgewood College. Papenthien posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Gillespie in the first flight, while Lagman marked a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Sauberlich in the second. Davenport defeated Gorski by a 7-5, 6-1 result in the third flight.

UW-Oshkosh closes its 2015 season by hosting Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday (April 24) at the Kolf Sports Center outdoor courts.
