Titans Open Season With Defeats To Iowa Schools

The UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team opened its first season under head coach Daniel Bickett with a pair of 9-0 defeats to Grinnell College (Iowa) and Graceland University (Iowa) on Saturday (Jan. 31) in Grinnell, Iowa.

Grinnell College (1-0) won every singles contest in straight sets, including Rob Storrick's 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jordan Andersen in the sixth flight and Cole Miller's 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Aidan Sauberlich in the second.

UW-Oshkosh (0-2) enjoyed its best individual success in the first flight, where Mike Gillespie dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Elliott Czarnecki. The Titans' David La Grange lost a 6-2, 6-2 result to Charlie Wilhelm in the fourth flight.

Other individual winners for the Pioneers were Aaron Lapkin in the third flight and C.J. Ray in the fifth. Lapkin defeated Vincent Gorski, 6-1, 6-2, while Ray ousted Adam Martin, 6-2, 6-1.

UW-Oshkosh's closest defeat in doubles play was in the second flight, where Gorski and Martin lost by an 8-4 score to Emilio Gomez and Tracy Johnson.

The Pioneer's Czarnecki and Tommy Pitcher won by an 8-2 decision over Gillespie and Sauberlich at No. 1 doubles, while Miller and Ray won by an 8-3 result over La Grange and Austin Laumb at No. 3.

Like Grinnell College, Graceland University (2-0) also swept its singles matches against UW-Oshkosh in straight sets.

The Yellowjackets, affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, received a shutout (6-0, 6-0) from Brezile Hamilton at No. 5 singles, a 6-0, 6-1 win from Jose Daniele Razo Torres at No. 1 and a 6-1, 6-0 victory from Lorenzo Panariti at No. 6. Hamilton defeated Martin, while Torres and Panariti ousted Sauberlich and David Leffler, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh's closest individual match was in the second flight, where Gillespie lost a 6-3, 6-2 verdict to Borja Perez.

Other individual winners for Graceland University were Oscar Chang Tun Jie in the third flight and Danil Tarantinov in the fourth. Both players won by 6-3, 6-0 scores, Jie over Gorski and Tarantinov over La Grange.

In doubles action, UW-Oshkosh's No. 1 tandem of Gillespie and Sauberlich lost an 8-4 result to Perez and Torres.

At No. 2 doubles, Hamilton and Jie beat the Titans' duo of Gorski and Martin, 8-2. The Yellowjackets took the No. 3 doubles contest as Gonzalo Munoz and Felipe Suarez Parra defeated La Grange and Laumb, 8-3.    

UW-Oshkosh takes to the court next Saturday (Feb. 7) in Elkhorn against UW-Whitewater and Lake Forest College (Ill.).
