Titans Conquer Vikings, Eagles In Season Debut

UW-Oshkosh opened its 2014 men's tennis season with convincing victories over Lawrence University and Edgewood College on Saturday (Feb. 15) at the YMCA Tennis Center.

The Titans (2-0) defeated Lawrence University, 9-0, in the opener before ousting Edgewood College, 8-1, in the nightcap.

Against Lawrence University (1-2), UW-Oshkosh's Aidan Sauberlich won by a 6-0, 6-0 result over Sam Wiener at No. 4 singles. The Titans recorded another shutout when Jason Alexander and Matt Brooks marked an 8-0 victory over Adam Busch and Mitch Kasprzyk at No. 3 doubles.

UW-Oshkosh won its remaining doubles contests by 8-2 scores. Earning wins for the Titans were Bobby Brooks and Kevin Lewis over Jeremy Andereck and Brian DeCorte in the first flight and Sauberlich and Mike Gillespie over Wiener and David Jumes in the second.

Other individual wins belonged to the Titans' Alex Yang in the sixth flight and Gillespie in the third. Yang defeated Ethan Perushek, 6-1, 6-1, while Gillespie beat Jumes, 6-2, 6-1.

UW-Oshkosh completed its list of individual winners with Bobby Brooks, Lewis and Alexander. Brooks tallied a 6-4, 6-4 win over DeCorte in the first flight, while Lewis marked a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Andereck in the second. Alexander was victorious by a 6-2, 6-2 result over Kasprzyk in the sixth flight.

UW-Oshkosh's victory over Edgewood College (0-8) featured a 6-0, 6-0 win by Lewis over Patrick Lagman at No. 2 singles and a 6-2, 6-1 triumph by Alexander over Alex Hadjiev at No. 4 singles.

Other individual winners for the Titans were Sauberlich in the third flight and Yang in the fifth. Sauberlich registered a 6-0, 6-4 win over Brian Davenport, while Yang notched a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Michael Wanta.

In doubles play, UW-Oshkosh's No. 1 tandem of Lewis and Bobby Brooks posted an 8-5 win over Lagman and Austin Papenthien. At No. 2 doubles, the Titans' Gillespie and Sauberlich tallied an 8-1 victory over Davenport and Wanta.

UW-Oshkosh winners due to forfeit were Matt Brooks at No. 6 singles and Alexander and Matt Brooks at No. 3 doubles.

Edgewood College's lone victory came at No. 1 singles, where Papenthien defeated Bobby Brooks, 6-4, 6-4.

UW-Oshkosh travels to Elkhorn for matches against Lake Forest College (Ill.) on Friday (Feb. 21) and Wheaton College (Ill.) and UW-Whitewater on Saturday (Feb. 22).
