Jernberg Paces Titans At WIAC Championship

Alex Jernberg finished in the top 10 in three events to lead UW-Oshkosh at the 59th Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Championship (Presented by Culver's) that completed four consecutive days of competition Saturday (Feb. 19) at the Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer.

Jernberg placed fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:39.67, seventh in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:43.56 and 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke at 59.89 seconds. His times in all three events were season bests.

Jernberg previously finished fourth in the 1,650- and eighth in the 500-yard freestyles at the 2020 championship and fourth in the 1,650- and fifth in the 500-yard freestyles at the 2019 league meet. The 2021 championship was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Titan Cade Millam contributed a trio of top 16 listings at this year's championship by finishing 15th in both the 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard breaststroke with times of 2:12.74 and 2:24.98 and 16th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a swim of 1:05.98. All three times recorded by Millam were season bests.

UW-Oshkosh's Andrew Copeland finished 11th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.86 seconds and Hayden Freeman 12th in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly with performances of 58.53 seconds and 2:10.95, respectively.

Chase Millam of the Titans added freestyle times of 1:48.66 for 14th place at 200 and 49.48 seconds for 15th place at 100 yards while Drew Davis supplied freestyle times of 1:50.72 for 15th place at 200 and 50.14 seconds for 16th place at 100 yards.

UW-Oshkosh concluded its top 16 mentions with Matt Holst's 15th-place time of 2:17.49 in the 200-yard backstroke.

UW-Stevens Point scored 932 points to narrowly win its 22nd straight WIAC team title and 25th overall. The Pointers edged UW-Eau Claire's second-place total of 930 points for the closest margin of victory at the conference championship since 1969.

UW-La Crosse finished third at this year's league meet with 649 points while UW-Whitewater placed fourth with 332 and UW-Oshkosh fifth with 205.
