Red Hawks Defeat Titans In Regular-Season Finale

Grady Hilgendorf, Jarrett Lieder and Josiah Vandenberg won one event apiece and swam on a first-place relay team during UW-Oshkosh's 107-92 men's swimming & diving loss to the Ripon College on Saturday (Feb. 3) in Ripon.

The meet consisted of 11 swimming events, with the host Red Hawks winning seven and the Titans four.

Hilgendorf won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:58.47 and placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:06.01 while Lieder took first place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:57.51 and second in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:51.05. 

Vandenberg posted a winning time of 2:06.53 in the 200-yard individual medley and finished third in 100-yard butterfly at 56.15 seconds.

Hilgendorf, Lieder and Vandenberg joined Bryan Solomon in recording a first-place time of 1:44.10 in the 200-yard medley relay. Solomon also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly and third in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 56.12 and 23.97 seconds, respectively. 

Other second-place finishes belonged to the Titans' David Bain in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:36.03 and Ian Sewell in the 1,000-yard freestyle at 11:20.24. Sewell also ranked third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.13 seconds and Bain fourth in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:04.88.

UW-Oshkosh's Mitchell Bricco contributed a pair of third-place swims with his times of 1:04.00 in the 100-yard backstroke and 2:14.44 in the 200-yard individual medley.

The Titans' remaining fourth-place finishes included two by Dylan Sobolewski. Sobolewski recorded times of 5:39.71 in the 500-yard freestyle and 11:33.76 in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

Also finishing fourth for UW-Oshkosh were Brandon Davison and Trevor Jacobs. Davison had a time of 1:57.70 in the 200-yard freestyle and Jacobs a performance of 53.14 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle. 

UW-Oshkosh placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Davison, Jacobs, Sewell and Nathan Newman registered a time of 1:36.10.

Matt Wilke, who did not compete against Ripon College, represented UW-Oshkosh on Saturday at the University of Illinois at Chicago Diving Invitational in Chicago, Ill.

Wilke finished fourth among 12 participants in the 1-meter diving with a score of 274.05 and fifth among 12 contestants in the 3-meter diving with a value of 268.80.

Andrew Lewarchick of the University of Illinois at Chicago won the 1-meter category with 318.60 points while Heath Ogawa of Lake Forest College (Ill.) won the 3-meter division with 343.20. 

UW-Oshkosh is off until it competes at the WIAC Championship on Feb. 15-17 at the Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer. The Titans placed fifth at last year's championship with 198 points.
