Titans, Warhawks Play To Overtime Tie

The UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater men's soccer teams were unable to settle their differences as they played to a 1-1, double-overtime tie on Sunday (Nov. 2) in Whitewater.

The intense defensive battle had a total of just 10 shots, five by each team. UW-Whitewater earned nine of the game's 14 corner kicks.

UW-Whitewater (12-3-4, 2-0-2 WIAC) took the lead on a goal by Michael Salm during the 15th minute (14:27) of action. Salm's second goal of the season came off a pass from Sam Novak.

UW-Oshkosh (12-5-2, 3-0-1 WIAC) pulled even with the Warhawks early in the second half. Javier Simon created the 1-1 tie when he scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season during the 49th minute (48:25) of play. Simon's kick followed a pass from Jakub Rys.

Most of the game's activity took place in the first half. UW-Whitewater tallied three of its shots and five of its corner kicks in the opening period, while UW-Oshkosh counted two shots and four corner kicks.

The two overtime periods featured just one shot, an attempt by UW-Oshkosh in the first session.

Novak of UW-Whitewater and Michael Dugan of UW-Oshkosh led their teams with two shots apiece.

UW-Whitewater's Josh Rohde recorded the lone goalkeeping save in the 51st minute. His stop came on a shot taken by UW-Oshkosh's Hans Becker.

Kevin Schenk started at goalkeeper for the Titans and played into the game's 17th minute. Sam Gabrilska replaced Schenk and didn't face a shot during his 93 minutes of action.

Sunday's match ended the regular season for both teams. However, both squads will continue their 2014 campaign with play in this week's WIAC Championship. The four-team tournament begins on Wednesday (Nov. 5) as top-seed UW-Oshkosh hosts fourth-seed UW-Platteville and second seed UW-Whitewater hosts third seed UW-Superior. The championship match is scheduled for Friday (Nov. 7) at the site of the highest remaining seed.
