Titans Defeat Defending WIAC Champion Yellowjackets

UW-Oshkosh opened its WIAC men's soccer schedule with a 1-0, double-overtime victory over defending league champion UW-Superior on Saturday (Oct. 4) in Superior.

After two 45-minute halves and a 10-minute overtime session, UW-Oshkosh broke a scoreless contest on Jonathan Stanley's header during the seventh minute (106:48) of the final extra period.

Stanley's shot, which came off a corner kick from John Schwalbach, was the only one taken by the Titans in overtime. The goal was Stanley's third of the season.

UW-Oshkosh (7-4-1, 1-0 WIAC) was outshot, 12-9, but owned five of the game's eight shots on goal. Jacob Hernandez attempted three shots, while Stanley and Danny Kobin both launched two for the Titans.

UW-Superior (7-4, 2-1 WIAC), which defeated Finlandia University (Mich.) and UW-Platteville in its first two league games, was led by the three shots from Ben Kasper. The Yellowjackets also received two shots from both Brian Grand and Gio Rodriguez.

UW-Oshkosh posted a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Sam Gabrilska saved three shots en route to his second shutout of the season. UW-Superior's Matt Elder stopped four shots, including three in the second half.

The win increases UW-Oshkosh's lead in its all-time series with UW-Superior to 15-1-1.

UW-Oshkosh finishes its weekend road trip at the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) on Sunday (Oct. 5).
