Flying Dutchmen Edge Titans In NCAA Posteason Opener

Long throw-ins from Neil Grant led to both Hope College (Mich.) goals as the Flying Dutchmen edged UW-Oshkosh, 2-1, in a first round match of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship held Friday (Nov. 15) in Waverly, Iowa.

The victory advances Hope College (17-4-2) to the second round of the 61-team tournament, where it will play host Wartburg College (Iowa) at 5 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 16) in Waverly. The Knights (16-4-2) kept their season alive with Friday's 4-0 home win over Dominican University (Ill.) (12-5-2).

Hope College took a 1-0 lead over UW-Oshkosh when Logan Sikkenga scored off Grant's 35-yard throw-in during the 13th minute (12:37) of play. Grant threw his pass to the goal, where Sikkenga retrieved the loose ball and kicked a five-yard shot into the net for his seventh score of the season.

The Flying Dutchmen held their one-goal advantage until they scored off another long throw-in from Grant during the 54th minute (53:14). This time, Matthew VanZytveld scooped up Grant's 30-yard pass in front of the goal and booted a three-yard shot into the net. The goal was VanZytveld's second of the season.

UW-Oshkosh (15-2-4), which entered the contest ranked ninth in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, cut its deficit when Jonathan Stanley scored on an eight-yard shot with 3:17 to play.

UW-Oshkosh attempted 12 shots, including seven in the second half. Hope College launched eight shots, with four dispatched in each period. The Flying Dutchmen had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Chris Kurth led UW-Oshkosh with three shots, while Sikkenga paced Hope College with two.

Both goalkeepers went the distance, with Sam Gabrilska saving three shots for the Titans and Ethan Beeswick two for the Flying Dutchmen. Gabrilska had all of his saves in the second half.

Friday's match was the sixth between the teams, but just the first since UW-Oshkosh posted a 2-0 victory over Hope College in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Division III Championship. The Flying Dutchmen now own a 3-2-1 advantage in the series.

UW-Oshkosh's 29th consecutive winning season ends with its 13th appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship.
