Starnes Scores Twice To Lead Titans Past Sabres

Tony Starnes scored his second goal of the match on a penalty kick with 20 minutes remaining as the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team defeated Marian University, 2-1, on Tuesday (Oct. 29) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Starnes earned the opportunity for his game-winning goal after a Marian University player was called for a handball inside the 18-yard penalty box at the 69:58 mark of the contest. The conversion of the penalty kick was Starnes' team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Starnes gave UW-Oshkosh (13-0-4) a quick 1-0 lead when he scored on a 16-yard kick just 4:46 into play. His goal came off a pass from Jan Nachtigall.

Marian University (5-10-2) managed just four shots in the contest, but a 10-yard kick from Brandon Chavez tied the score during the 15th minute (14:27) of play. His boot followed a pass from Ramon Sutherland.

UW-Oshkosh totaled 26 shots while posting a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. A total of 12 Titans attempted shots, including Starnes who launched five, Hernandez who fired four and Nachgitall and Michael Dugan who dispatched three each. Nate Peltonen owned half of Marian University's shot count.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Sam Gabrilska faced only shot, and that was the goal allowed to Chavez. Bryce Woldt saved 10 shots for the Sabres, including six in the first half. Marian University also had a defender stop a shot from going into the net.

It was the 29th meeting between the teams, with UW-Oshkosh now owning a 27-1-1 advantage in the series.

UW-Oshkosh, which entered Tuesday's match ranked sixth in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, looks to conclude the regular season unbeaten when it hosts UW-Whitewater (14-4-1/3-0 WIAC) on Saturday (Nov. 2) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
