Titans Score Often During Win Over Lions

UW-Oshkosh erupted for seven second-half goals as it trounced the Finlandia University (Mich.) men's soccer team, 9-0, on Sunday (Oct. 6) in Hancock, Mich.

Tony Starnes ignited the Titans' offensive explosion by scoring twice within a span of 56 seconds in the first half. Starnes converted a penalty kick in the game's 18th minute (17:50) and then scored off a pass from Faisal Bah in the 19th (18:46).

UW-Oshkosh's second-half scoring featured two goals from Jonathan Stanley and a pair of penalty kicks.

Stanley scored the Titans' fifth goal off passes from Malcom Jeffris and Nick Woodbury in the 76th minute (75:53). He then tallied UW-Oshkosh's eighth goal off passes from Danny Kobin and Tanner Freund in the 86th (85:34).

Making penalty kicks for UW-Oshkosh (8-0-4/1-0-1 WIAC) were Freund in the 78th minute (77:37) and Woodbury in the 80th (79:57). They were the Titans' sixth and seventh goals of the contest.

UW-Oshkosh began the second half with goals by Chris Kurth and Kirby Allen. Kurth scored off a pass Jacob Hernandez in the 52nd minute (51:28), while Allen scored off a serve from Bah in the 61st (60:28).

The Titans, who entered the match with only 16 goals on the season, closed their scoring on Paul Messerly's goal with 10 seconds remaining (89:50). Jeffris assisted his goal.

UW-Oshkosh attempted 37 shots and earned 16 of the game's 17 corner kicks. A total of 16 Titans launched shots, including Woodbury who fired six.

Finlandia University (3-6-1/0-2 WIAC) was limited to just two shots, one from both Jaime Cuevas and Josh Huneault.

Goalkeepers Sam Gabrilska and Kevin Schenk combined for UW-Oshkosh's eighth shutout of the season. Both players went unchallenged.

Finlandia University Miguel Gamez saved 10 shots and allowed all nine UW-Oshkosh scores.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, travels to Lakeland College on Wednesday (Oct. 9).
