Titans, Gusties Unable To Settle Result

A physical defensive battle ended without a winner as the UW-Oshkosh and Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) men's soccer teams played to a scoreless double-overtime tie on Sunday (Sept. 8) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

The 110-minute match featured 10 shots on goal, but just one major scoring opportunity. The chance came when UW-Oshkosh's Chris Whalen hit the cross pipe during the 10th minute of play.

Gustavus Adolphus College (2-1-1) won the shot count, 12-11. The Gusties attempted four shots in the first half, five in the second half and three in the second overtime period. A total of 11 Gusties launched shots, including Jonathan Balthazar who fired two.

UW-Oshkosh (3-0-1), which entered the contest ranked 21st in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, dispatched six shots in the second half, three in the first half and one during each of the two overtime sessions. The Titans were led by the three shots of Chris Kurth and the two of Ryan Redmond.

Goalkeepers Sam Gabrilska of UW-Oshkosh and Brett Ylonen of Gustavus Adolphus College both saved five shots. Gabrilska has now gone 380 minutes this season without allowing a goal.

The highly competitive contest featured 36 fouls and 11 yellow cards, including 19 fouls and seven yellow cards on Gustavus Adolphus College. Due to a player receiving a second yellow card, the Gusties played the final 50 minutes of the match with only 10 participants.

UW-Oshkosh hosts fifth-ranked and defending Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Loras College on Wednesday (Sept. 11) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium. Last season, the Duhawks advanced to the semifinal round of the NCAA Division III Championship.
