Titans Complete Sweep Of California Soccer Squads

The UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team capped a successful season-opening trip to California with a 2-0 victory over Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Sunday (Sept. 1) in Claremont.

UW-Oshkosh, which began its journey with a 1-0 win over Chapman University on Friday (Aug. 30), scored late in each half to defeat the defending Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Sagehens (0-2).

Jonathan Stanley recorded UW-Oshkosh's game-winning goal with 11:32 left in the first half. Tanner Freund played a long ball up the sideline that Karl Bock got to near the corner and found space for a cross. Stanley snuck in between the defense, retrieved the ball and then sailed a shot into the net from eight yards out.

The Titans (2-0) clinched the victory on a goal by Tony Starnes with 6:50 to play. Ryan Redmond played a long ball up the sideline to Starnes, who darted into the box and converted a shot from 15 yards out.

The contest featured 12 shots, with eight of them belonging to UW-Oshkosh. Elias Efthimiou owned two shots for the Titans and Lawrence MacDonald two for the Sagehens. Pomona-Pitzer Colleges had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Goalkeepers Sam Gabrilska of UW-Oshkosh and Nigel Brady of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges each had a save.

UW-Oshkosh plays Nebraska Wesleyan University on Saturday (Sept. 7) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium for its first home match of the season.
