Men's Soccer Team Successful In Season Debut

A defensive scuffle went in favor of UW-Oshkosh as the Titans opened their 30th men's soccer season with a 1-0 victory over Chapman University (Calif.) on Friday (Aug. 30) in Orange, Calif.

UW-Oshkosh's Matt Cheaney scored the game's lone goal in the 37th minute (36:29) of action. Cheaney took advantage of a failed clear attempt by the Chapman University (0-1) defense to record his first collegiate goal.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Sam Gabrilska saved five shots during his collegiate debut, including a one-on-one blast by the Panthers' Daniel Malikyar with four minutes to play.

Chapman University, a first-time opponent of UW-Oshkosh, split its goalkeeping duties between Nick Berardi and Yuki Schafer. Berardi played the first half and stopped two shots, while Schafer played the second half and marked a save on his only chance.

UW-Oshkosh was held to just seven shots. The Titans had four shots on goal, with Cheaney, Kirby Allen, Jacob Hernandez and Ryan Redmond counting one each.

Chapman University attempted 10 shots, including three by Nick Echeverry and two by Daniel Friedman. The Panthers had five shots on goal.

UW-Oshkosh concludes its first trip to California since the 1991 season with a match against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Sunday (Sept. 1) in Claremont.
