Boots, Noone Reach Scoring Milestone In Titans' Win Over Eagles

Jack Flynn had a game-high 21 points, Ben Boots and Charlie Noone both reached career scoring milestones, and the nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team never trailed on the way to a 70-54 win over UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Feb. 10) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (18-5, 8-4 WIAC), ranked 21st in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, took the lead for good at 12-9 with 12:18 left in the first half. The Titans extended their advantage to 31-21 at intermission and led by as many as 19 points late in the second period.

The Titans also won at UW-La Crosse by a 72-65 score on Jan. 6.

UW-Oshkosh remains alone in third in the league standings – two games behind conference co-leaders UW-Platteville (20-3, 10-2 WIAC) and UW-Stevens Point (16-7, 10-2) – with two games remaining.

UW-La Crosse (11-12, 3-9 WIAC) was held to its lowest point total in the 73 games since a 65-47 loss to Hope College (Mich.) on Nov. 20, 2015. The Eagles also produced their worst scoring output in a WIAC contest since a 69-52 setback to UW-Eau Claire on Feb. 14, 2015.

Flynn, who entered the game leading the WIAC with a .629 field goal percentage, shot 6-for-9 from the floor and 9-for-10 at the free throw line.

Boots and Noone both scored their 1,000th career point on Saturday to become the second set of UW-Oshkosh teammates to accomplish the feat in the same game. John Lallensack and Ron Hayek previously reached 1,000 points during UW-Oshkosh's 102-86 win over UW-River Falls on Feb. 17, 1968.

Noone was the 31st Titans to reach the 1,000-point milestone on a 3-pointer at the 12:56 mark of the second half before Boots achieved the plateau with a pair of free throws less than three minutes later.

Noone, who hit four 3-pointers and scored 15 points on Saturday, finished the contest with 1,000 career points in 105 games. Noone, a senior, ranks fifth in UW-Oshkosh history with 214 career 3-pointers.

Boots, who went into Saturday leading the conference with 4.1 assists per contest and an .845 free throw percentage, recorded eight points, five rebounds and a game-best six assists against UW-La Crosse. The junior guard concluded the night with 1,006 career points in his 79th game.

UW-Oshkosh's Adam Fravert added eight points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals on Saturday. He went into the game with a WIAC-high 7.5 rebounds per game and 29 blocks.

The Titans owned advantages in field goal (.449 to .386), 3-point (.368 to .333) and free throw (.704 to .417) percentages in addition to edges in assists (14-7), turnovers (12-10), blocks (5-2) and steals (6-4). UW-La Crosse held a 37-36 rebounding advantage, including 13-8 on the offensive end.

UW-Oshkosh raced out to a 9-4 lead behind three layups from Flynn and a 3-pointer by Noone. UW-La Crosse tied the score at 9, but a long-range jumper from Connor Duax gave the Titans a 12-9 lead it would not relinquish.

Leading 17-15, UW-Oshkosh scored eight consecutive points to extend its advantage to 25-15 and led by at least five points for the final 28 minutes of the game.

UW-La Crosse cut its deficit to 38-33 with 13:42 left in the second half, but Noone recorded a steal near midcourt and fed Fravert for a two-handed dunk that gave the Titans a 45-35 lead.

Flynn converted a pair of free throws to increase the UW-Oshkosh advantage 47-37, and the Titans maintained a double-digit lead for the final 10:46 of the game.

UW-Oshkosh built its largest lead of 19 points at 67-48 following two free throws from Boots with 3:03 to play.

Brendon Manning led UW-La Crosse with 13 points and eight rebounds. Lane Von Rueden chipped in 10 points off the bench for the Eagles.

UW-Oshkosh travels to 18th-ranked UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday (Feb. 14).
