Fast Start Leads To Titans' Win Over Blugolds

UW-Oshkosh took a 5-2 lead and held the advantage the rest of the way as it defeated the UW-Eau Claire men's basketball team, 65-48, on Wednesday (Feb. 12) in Eau Claire.

The victory marked UW-Oshkosh's second win of the season over UW-Eau Claire, with the first being a 64-32 triumph on Jan. 22 in Kolf Sports Center. The Titans (11-11/6-7 WIAC) have now won six of their last eight games, while the Blugolds (10-13/3-11 WIAC) have lost seven of their last nine contests.

UW-Oshkosh outscored UW-Eau Claire, 12-3, over the first five minutes of the contest and built a 21-10 lead with 9:54 left in the opening period. The Blugolds pulled to within 29-22, but the Titans counted five of the next seven points to take a 34-24 advantage to intermission.

UW-Oshkosh led by double-digits the entire second half, including a 52-34 score with 11:26 to play. A string of eight straight points got UW-Eau Claire as close as 52-42, but the Titans responded with seven consecutive points to construct a 59-42 advantage with 6:49 remaining. Both teams went scoreless for the final 3:23 of the game.

Nick Olson came off the bench to total 12 points and seven rebounds, both UW-Oshkosh bests. The Titans also received 11 points from Max Schebel, 10 points from Kyle Bolger and eight points and six rebounds from Dylan Wurtz.

Jacob Kohner led the Blugolds in scoring with 14 points, while Lewis May tallied 12. Mau also led the Blugolds in rebounding with eight and had a game-high four assists.

UW-Oshkosh shot 48 percent (24-50) from the field and converted 11-of-13 free throws (84.6 percent). The Titans made 6-of-15 three-point shots (40 percent) while posting a 35-30 rebounding advantage. UW-Oshkosh had 12 turnovers.

The Blugolds finished the game shooting 34.5 percent (20-for-58) from the field, but just 9.1 percent (2-22) from three-point range. UW-Eau Claire drained six of its 10 free throws (60 percent) while turning the basketball over 10 times.

UW-Oshkosh travels to nationally ranked UW-Whitewater on Saturday (Feb. 15).
