Titans Rally In Closing Minutes To Record Victory

Alex Olson and Jake Laihinen converted three-point plays on consecutive trips down the court as UW-Oshkosh rallied in the final minutes for a 65-63 victory over the UW-River Falls men's basketball team on Saturday (Jan. 11) in River Falls.

UW-Oshkosh trailed 61-58 before Olson tied the score with his lay-up and free throw with 2:18 remaining. Following a UW-River Falls turnover, Laihinen put the Titans ahead for good with his lay-up and free throw with 1:38 left.

After a missed three-pointer by UW-River Falls' Grant Erickson and a turnover by UW-Oshkosh, Ben Gresmer cut the Falcons' deficit to 64-63 on a pair of free throws with 31 seconds to play.

UW-Oshkosh committed a turnover on the ensuing possession and UW-River Falls followed with a missed three-point shot by Jay Sewer.

Nick Olson then gave the Titans a 65-63 advantage on his free throw with 11 seconds remaining. Olson's second free throw missed the mark and that led to Sewer's miss of a highly contested three-pointer as time expired.

UW-Oshkosh (5-8/1-4 WIAC) had a pair of one-point leads early in the first half, with the latest being 11-10. UW-River Falls (6-9/1-5 WIAC) then scored 10 of the next 12 points to take a 20-13 advantage with 10:12 left in the opening period.

The Titans cut their deficit to 22-21, but the Falcons answered with four straight points and later took a 29-25 lead to intermission.

UW-River Falls opened up a 30-25 lead early in the second half. The Titans battled back to tie the score at 33, but fell behind 42-37 with 13:58 to play.

UW-Oshkosh stormed back with a 12-3 scoring run and took a 49-45 lead with 9:22 remaining. The Falcons then tied the score at 49 and counted eight of the next 11 points to grab a 57-52 lead with 4:40 left. A trio of free throws by UW-Oshkosh's Jade Royston during the next 41 seconds made the score 57-55.

Royston led UW-Oshkosh in scoring with 16 points. He also tallied four rebounds and three assists. The Titans received 15 points and seven rebounds from Alex Olson, 12 points and three rebounds from Dylan Wurtz and 11 points and five rebounds from Nick Olson.

Ollie White's 20 points paced UW-River Falls. The Falcons also obtained 18 points and four rebounds from Gresmer and 11 points from Erickson.

UW-Oshkosh shot 50 percent (22-44) from the field and 81 (17-21) from the free throw line. The Titans grabbed 31 rebounds, committed 16 turnovers and made four of their eight three-point tries (50 percent).

UW-River Falls posted shooting percentages of 40.4 (19-47) from the field, 28 (7-25) behind the arc and 72 (18-25) from the free throw line. The Falcons collected 25 rebounds and turned the basketball over 13 times.
